Both the anime store and the general purpose bookstore, a Waldenbooks, at Westlake center are gone. The anime store is going to be replaced with some lame beanbag store called Love Sacs, which claims that it's name has nothing to do with sex. Given the bloated human beanbag they have for a spokesman, a smiling Hawaiian gentlemen who has obviously consumed too much spam over the course of his days, I might agree.

I had to go into Hot Topic, despite the boycott (which I now see is lifted), to find some cheap stickers to adorn my laptop monitor now that I've replaced it. I found this cute goth-girl-butterfly-winged thing that's just perfect, but it's not a Hello Kitty sticker. Pout/

Look for a Sanrio outlet. There's one by me which sells Hello Kitty by the crapload. I even have some Hello Kitty stickers left over from my last run on it (I mostly have a small collection of Badzt Maru stuff - my husband buys me a stuffed Badzt Maru, usually, every Valentine's day, so that I presently have Badzt Maru wearing a Hanae Maru skin, and a Badzt Maru in a karate gi).

If you really can't find any, let me know; I still have some credit left at the local one and it wouldn't be a huge deal as long as you've got an address you're comfortable giving for mailing purposes.

Oh, there's a Sanrio place within reach, if I'm driving. I was busing yesterday, which is why I ducked into that particular shopping center-- it's near my tranfer point. I wasn't angsting that badly-- I rather like the gothique sticker-- I was just noting that stores I had relied upon had disappeared.

What was the boycott all about?

Despite all the gothic imagery that goes on in Hot Topic, for a while the Wicca community was in an uproar because Hot Topic refused to carry material with the word "Witch" on it. Apparently, Hot Topic got pressured to not carry material that might attempt to convert someone to paganism.

Hot Topic has since changed their policy and has stated that they'll carry "no" religious symbol stuff at all.

Didn't hear about the boycott either. I must be behind the times or something.

As for LoveSacs....I fell in love with them in the Virgin Megastore one of the last times that I went to Downtown Disney. And well, am this close to buying one. They are comfy and are just right for a few people to crawl on and relax.

As for the Hello Kitty stickers....tell me the size you want....I can prolly find you a goth hello kitty if you want and send it to you!

I prefer the cute little bunny that says terribly rude things whilst smiling. usually in the form of "your stupid" and the like. :p

Really, I can't be incredibly sorry about either of these. Waldenbooks is an okay bookstore if you've got nothing better, but it's not as though it's a magnificent wonder of independent bookselling -- if I wanted a book and was willing to hit up a chain, why wouldn't I walk the 1/2-block from Westlake over to the Borders right there, or even the 1 1/2 blocks to Barnes and Noble over in Pacific Place? And IMHO at least, that anime store wasn't really much better -- I was never that impressed with their selection, was substantially less than thrilled that they were carrying grey-market CDs (somewhat hypocritical of me, I know, but still...), and again, it just seems like there are much better alternatives out there for almost all of what they were selling.

True enough. It's not so much that a "Waldenbooks" (or Bretanos, which is an upscale subsidiary of Waldenbooks) had vanished, just that another bookstore had shuttered in the face of pressure. They seemed to be holding on against the Borders, but the B&N up the street was apparently a killing blow.

As for the anime store, well... there are better outlets available. It was more a matter of convenience. That store was on my bus line. Now I have to get into my car to get a fix.

If they're really selling Love Sacs and the name isn't a coincidence, check them out. They are WAY, WAY nicer than 'bean bags'. When I have a bigger place I will own one, or more. :-)

I have friends with them.

The description on the maker's site sounds a lot like Poof Chairs. Love Sac makes larger ones, but PoofChairs are a good bit cheaper. On the other hand, they do claim to use "memory foam", while pooychair uses polyurethane foam. Exactly how much difference there is, I don't know.

Still, that 6' LoveSac looks pretty tempting.
