Friday, after I got home, I discovered to my great pleasure that my new (used) monitor had come in, so it was time to take the laptop apart for a third time and put the new monitor in. The stripped screws I had mentioned previously turned out to be more annoying than I had thought and I ended up having to disassemble the peripherals communication board (not a recommended procedure) to get at one; the superglue trick didn't work. But I reassembled the whole thing, pulling a couple of screws out of the old, dead monitor to replace the two stripped ones, reassembled it all, and now Lain is working well.

The new monitor was sufficiently different from the old one that my Linux install "helpfully" failed to recognize it and I had to get online, find the new settings (the NM2200 chipset, not the NM2056 chipset), and update them. Everything worked. Kinda nifty.

We went out to eat at Wally's; neither of us was in any mood to cook. For reasons some of you may know, it's been a very stressful week, and there's no sign the stress is going to let up anytime soon. Omaha, Kouryou-chan and I are doing fine, and we're asking folks to keep the drama to a minimum. Wally's clam chowder was excellent, as usual, and Kouryou-chan, to my surprise, ate the fish she ordered.

Saturday, Omaha took Kouryou-chan to the library while I tried to catch up on some professional work. SSH port forwarding didn't work, and neither did the VPN client they gave me. I headed back to the library and got Omaha and Kouryou-chan, and we motored over to Home Depot for a yellowjacket trap and some play sand, then to Costco for some supplies for a get-together we were attending that night.

While Omaha shopped at Costco, I took Kouryou-chan out to the park nearby where we watched this really neat bird dive underwater, then pop back up. While she looked around for flowers, she suddenly said, "Daddy, my tummy feels tickly." She pulled up her shirt and there was an ant crawling about in her bellybutton. I pinched it out, but she spent a bit of time being freaked. She's at that age where bugs are the scariest thing she knows.

Then, Omaha and I went over to [livejournal.com profile] j5nn5r's home for his going-away party. He's a crazy dude; he's signed up for a year over in Iraq as part of a private security force. The party was good, but his wife seems a little less assured than she did when he first chose to go. I got quite a bit buzzed, but stopped around nine; by one A.M. I was stone sober, although tired. I did some time in the hottub, and made the mistake of teaching Desirae how to bittorrent and download the TV episodes she missed.

I got home, took the baby-sitter back to her place, and returned to go to bed. I slept hard.
