Whereas the profoundly held religious belief that all people are created in the image of God and are therefore equal in the eyes of God ultimately led to the abolition of the deeply entrenched institution of slavery;

Quite a skip from talking about deep religious convictions among the Founding Fathers (who explicitly allowed slavery in the US) to abolitionists.

And does this mean I can have a long presentation about deism given to the local public school?

I dont know about that presentation there :-p. Im just a plain old stark non-religious person. I just stay away from the subject if it stays away from me. Just wish the government followed its own laws.(seperation of church and state).

As far as the US was concerned, it took civil war for slavery to be abolished; and slavemasters happy quoted their holy books (http://bible.gospelcom.net/bible?language=English&version=NIV&passage=Leviticus%2025:44-46), saying that God was on their side.
