Well, home alone with Kouryou-chan after dropping Omaha off at her radio show, I'm busy boiling pasta on the stove. Kouryou-chan is fascinated by the solid block of pasta sauce that came out of the 'fridge, so I'm letting her stir the broken-up chunks once in a while.

One of the things that has vexed Omaha and I is printing via SMB to her Windows XP box, on which is the household printer. According to Microsoft, the SMB printer share was correctly exposed, and according to both Apple and Redhat out computers were correctly configured.

Here's what Microsoft doesn't tell you: Windows XP will silently drop any printing request from a user that doesn't have a password. Since Omaha's desktop is Omaha's alone, she doesn't have a password for the home user. I had to create a special user, "theprinter", establish a password for it, and now I can send it printer requests from my Linux box and they work. Whee!

After half an hour of cardgames I told Kouryou-chan to get naked and into the bathtub. She proceeded to make a mess, splashing water on the floor, wasting soap... sigh. The joys of fatherhood.

But she did eat all of her dinner, so after her bath I gave her a scoop of ice cream. "Ice cream! Ice cream!" she chanted as I pulled it out. "Yeah, that flavor! Let me scoop it?" She tried, but it was too hard, so I did it. "That scoop doesn't work very well," she observed.

It's time to read to her and put her to sleep. She wants Beatrix Potter again. Well, at least there's variety.

I seriously can't wait to start reading to my kid (and actually having him pay attention -- as it is, he's all about grabbing pages and sticking them in his mouth). I had this bright idea of reading to him whatever I happen to be reading, to give him a taste of grown-up books. I'm wondering if that'll even come close to working, though?

reading everything

Reading adult books to them is actually likely to work better while they're still very young. It exposes them to more language patterns, much like talking to them, but they won't get a lot of content out of it.
