Weak Weakend
Feb. 16th, 2004 09:26 amI was sick all weekend. From the moment I got home Friday night until even now, I've had a stuffy head, nasty cough, and that general under-the-weather feeling that comes from fighting off whatever it is my daughter brought home two weeks ago. I feel like crap.
Omaha and I tried to have a Valentine's weekend, but between being ill (both of us have it) and ridiculous wait times at various venues, we settled for going out to our favorite Japanese restaurant, Miyabi's, and then heading home. Thanks to
fallenpegasus for watching Kouryou-chan for a few hours so we could be adults again. I just wish we'd had better plans.
We did get one nice time in: Omaha and I took Kouryou-chan to a play called "The Peach Boy," a Japanese puppet show about a boy who is sent from "the heavens" to avenge his parent's great loss and to save his nation from the evil Oni (ogres). His compatriots are a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant. Kouryou-chan loved every second of it, but even when she saw that the King Oni was a puppet run by a human, she couldn't be convinced to go up and say "Hi" to him or his puppeteer.
Kouryou-chan also got new shoes. Her old ones fit fine, but one of the buckles had broken last week. We got her a brand new pair. Yeah, they light up when she walks--bad in a theatre, but pretty good if she's playing outside when night falls.
The pancakes I made Saturday were pretty good, as were the grilled cheese sandwiches we had Sunday. "Quesadilla" is a fancy way of saying "grilled cheese sandwich," which is what I had; Kouryou-chan thinks it's "gross" that I like it with salsa on it. Sunday night I made salmon with rice, asparagus, and a daikon-and-carrot salad that was interesting, but the salmon was a little too dry and I couldn't taste the rub I'd put on it.
Omaha got some gardening done while I took Kouryou-chan out to the playground; the surface there has a flat track going around it, so she got to play with her tricycle some. She enjoys that a lot. We tried to teach her backgammon at her request, but the intricacies were too much for her and she quickly got bored. I tried to help her with her 1000-piece puzzle Sunday night, but was too tired to do more than watch her.
She's fascinated by the new in-the-ear one-second thermometer we bought. She was getting tired of the three-minute sits while we took the temperature under her arm, and the accuracy wasn't that great anyway, so we bought one of these newfangled things. She loves using it, and she's learned to read it, and she's learning what's healthy and what isn't.
And a national tragedy to report: after a 26-day run, that lovely woman emerging from the sea I reported back in January has finally fallen off the "top ten most emailed photos" from Yahoo! News. Ah, well. All Glory Is Fleeting.
