So, I did some tallying. Here it is, February 13th. The last time I had a weekend where I had nothing scheduled was the first weekend in January; ever since then, I have been on the go, out the door, doing anything and everything except relaxing. It doesn't look like I'll be having an opportunity any time soon to relax, either.

I tried to figure out how much television I've watched this month so far. I went back and looked through my diary. First, the average television is on 7 hours, and the average individual in a household watches 4 hours, daily. By now, being "average," I should have seen 52 hours. I've watched 66 minutes.

I'm really starting to feel too much like a machine. I haven't had an opportunity to read many of the books I have lying around the house, or to watch video. I had to delete the rest of my Big O collection because I missed five episodes and lost all track of the story arc; fortunately, Cartoon Network is starting over.

Maybe I'm just tired after a long week of fighting Kouryou-chan over her sleep schedule, waking us up in the middle of the night, and generally being a louse. I know she's sick, and I'm supposed to be compassionate, but it's Friday and goddess knows I just want to sleep in tomorrow.

I'm too young to feel so old.

One of the wisest counsellors in my past was Father John Riegel, the Episcopal minister at my high school. He told me once that the problem with Americans was that they knew how to relax, but they didn't know how to loaf-- and loafing, he claimed, was one of life's true secret pleasures.

I haven't even gotten to relaxing yet.

Well, yes, because relaxing is easy.

"What do you do to relax?"
"I go hiking/sew/bake/shop/read/write code/etc."

It all involves doing something.

Loafing, by contrast, involves doing nothing, which is a very unAmerican thing to do, doncha know. We're always supposed to be doing something, being active, being productive in our lives. It's the good ol' American Way.

I can honestly say I know how to loaf... I get it honest, my dad is one of the world's best. :)

In another world, it could be called storytelling...
