So, I went to the pool this morning. Everything went according to plan, for once, although I was ten minutes late getting out of the house because I forgot to set my alarm. If it hadn't been for Kouryou-chan getting into bed with us at about that time, I might have missed it. My brain was insisting that, really, all this effort isn't really worth it, I don't seem to be getting much out of it. 'Course, this is only the third week and my tendonitis has diminished appreciably. Still can't do much more than 90 seconds worth of The Plank, but that's a different story.

I mananged the usual: 700 meters or so, mostly breast stroke and crawl with some backstroke kicking-only to improve the strength in my thighs and calves. They feel like lead right now; my forearms, too, and that's probably because I'm trying a more aggressive and energy-intensive crawl than usual. I even managed to butterfly for fifty meters, but that was about it.

And the right eye of my goggles keeps leaking. Usually, for the warm-up, I have to try over and over to re-seat it before it behaves. Finally, though, I did get it and the rest of the swim went without fail.

I seem to be at something of an attitudinal limit. I reached the 20 minute mark-- the minimum-- and after giving it another hundred meters gave up and decided that I'd done what I had to do, that was enough. I really should go at least the full half hour, and reach the full kilometer. Afterwards, I felt the nausea come back pretty hard, and the dizziness was there, but it wasn't so bad.

Well, it looks like Ayodhya is back in the news. The Hindu/Nationalist VHP party is holding a rally tonight to demand the right to build a temple on the site of an ancient mosque that was torn down by a mob in 1992. The subsequent riots following that event killed "3000 people" (according to the article, which fails to mention that of those 3000, 90% of them were Muslim, and it also fails to mention the 30,000 Muslims who have been "displaced" by the violence).

Nowhere are you safe from evangelical Christians. No comment needed.

Jim Wagner of Memphis had a heart attack, so his friends dialed 911. Rather than take directions over the phone, the 911 operator chose to trust what the database told him about the location-- and sent the ambulance to the wrong address. So did the second operator. And the third. And despite the fact that Jim was dying one block away from the county line, Bartlett county operators either could not or would not send assistance.

A car bomb explodes in North London, setting fire to one house and blowing ou the windows of others. Is it the IRA? Is it Islamic extremism? No, the target is a gay couple. Scary.

What if, instead of Rush Limbaugh, it had been Bill Clinton who admitted to drug addiction? Here's what Rush would say.

"Our culture's story is of a weak, feeble person, who is continually at risk, and for whom the chances of things going wrong are very great." Why therapy has gone awry, and your friends will serve you better.

The Village Voice has a great article on online pharmacies, the ready-when-you-are kind, and why these are a "good thing." It's surprisingly libertarian.

Speaking of which, I saw an article asking will Libertarians bolt the Republican party? Julian Sanchez thinks they will, this time, and vote for Dean. Not because they love Dean particularly, but because it's realistic. Dean isn't likely to get through his more socialist policies, not with any Congress likely in the next twelve years, but because he's likely to continue one of Clinton's legacies: "The pattern is so well established that the generalisation can no longer be denied: The Republicans have become the party of fiscal irresponsibility, trade restriction, big government and bad microeconomics. Surprisingly, Democrat presidents have, relatively speaking, become the proponents of fiscal responsibility, free trade, competitive markets and neoclassical microeconomics."

Sanchez is right about one thing: few libertarians vote libertarian. The reason is simple: they're smart enough to know that what they should do is vote optimally and try and get the best candidate that has a chance into office.

Apparently, the Prime Minister of Malaysia is not one to stand down from inflammatory rhetoric. Yesterday, he said that "Jews rule the world by proxy" and accused them of "inventing human rights and democracy so that persecuting them would appear to be wrong." He then called on Muslims to resist "the enemies of Islam, those few million Jews." Oddly, he also implied that Jews got to where they are by being smarter than Muslims. Well, today the director of his political party got the heat for saying that even Muslim women who wear the right dress should stop wearing makeup and perfume under their veils because the mere knowledge that they do so can incite men to rape. Makes you wonder what kind of moral men they raise over there, doesn't it?

So, how do we feel about Lt. Gen. William Boykin's assertion, while wearing his full uniform, that "We are a Christian nation at war with Satan," "I won in Somalia because my God is a bigger god, a real god, and the opposition worshipped an idol", and "This Army is God's Army, raised to do God's work in this time"?

If you don't read The Daily Misleader, start doing so.

Oh, and even if you don't read the news, read this: Sex three times a week decreases your risk of heart disease, improves your physical fitness ("The bed is the best piece of exercise equipment ever invented"), reduces your risk of depression, lowers your susceptibility to colds and flu, reduces the risk of urinary incontinence in older years, and according to some reports might even improve oral health.

What is it with my subconscious? It's taken me 20,000 words to get Rhiane and Ilonca close enough that they might sleep with each other, and what do I do next? I get Rhiane nearly killed instead. I don't know if Ilonca will wait six weeks myself. And this is only the third re-write; there'll have to be a fourth because the story's so damned crufty. Ah, well. Stay tuned.

These sort of practices always make me wonder what's so wrong with simple self-control that they can't just enforce THAT on a moral basis. It just makes me so angry they spend more time pointing the finger than they do taking responsibility for it.

If it's really always the victim's fault, then it should also be the victim's fault in things like murder, but surprisingly that doesn't seem to be the case.

Just stupid.
