So, immediately following the deaths of Leni Reifenstahl and Edward Teller, we learn that Johnny Cash and John Ritter died yesterday. John Ritter was especially shocking: he was only 54 and had just finished taping the voiceovers for the latest season of Clifford, The Big Red Dog, for which he provided the voice of the title character. How am I going to explain to Kouryou-chan that Clifford's voice changed next season}}?

Meanwhile, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has come out saying that "alcohol ads aimed at the lucrative 21-30 market cannot help but be appealing to those under-21 years old." Well, duh. But this doesn't explain why the National Academy of Science called for the "retargeting" of those ads so the under-21 crowd won't see them. That's impossible, unless we want to put everyone under the age of 21 into a bubble and deny them any knowledge, any experience at all, of what life is like for the over-21 crowd. This is the stuff of bad science fiction.

The Economist diagnoses the health of the Open Source Movement and finds that things look good. But it's not businesses and schools that make Open Source seem so useful; it's governments, which are beholden to The People to ensure that the data they collect is in a universal, non-proprietary format.

Whoa. Anyone care to build a supercomputer by exploiting the sensibilities of Legos? There does seem to be a problem with building Beowulfs this way: it's hard to get cooling into the center of the system, and power regulation must be a nightmare. But still, I think I depicted an older-style AI built like this in some of the Journal Entries. Weird...

More from the world of multiculturalism and acceptance of alien ways: 130 Saudi clerics and academics have written an open letter to the goverment claiming that "civil rights" arguments seeking to give women the right to drive a car or leave their home unattended or not wearing a total burkah were part of an anti-Islamic conspiracy being directed from the United States.

Yes, and... ?

Meanwhile, in Jordan, the day after the government defeated an attempt to raise the penalties on men who claim "honor" after killing a woman relative, two women were hacked to death by their brothers. The women had apparently "shamed" the family by marrying men their father did not approve.

I can't be the only on disappointed with Tommy Chong's prison sentence for selling glass over the Internet. We so need to get rid of Ashcroft.

Exactly how would one go about "retargeting" an alcohol ad to ensure that nobody under the age of 21 would see it? Inquiring minds want to know (because anything is better than this database).

He also admitted to promoting drug paraphernalia[...]

So now they're arresting people for what they say?

:turns away sputtering with indigination.
