So, I took Friday off. It seemed like a good idea; I've racked up huge amounts of vacation time, I've come in on weekends, and I think by now I've done enough to take the day off. But such a day did not come with relaxation. Omaha had torn her back out of alignment and so I spend the day taking care of many of the lifting duties, such as laundry, cooking, and cleaning, along with taking care of Kouryou-chan. Which is an okay task by itself, I don't mind.

I also run out to a friend's home, the one I installed Linux on two weeks ago, and after fumbling with her broken BIOS (was that the problem with Win98, I wonder), I get her on the Internet in under an hour. She's got a browser, she's got mail. She's a diligent student and I'm sure that in no time she'll be up and running. She's utterly thrilled that in all the time she's used it, it hasn't crashed once at all.

I head home, only to turn back around and take Omaha to her doctor's appointment for her back. Kouryou-chan and I try to do some window shopping, but she spots a Reading Adventure computer set for second graders and becomes fixated on owning it, much to my frustration as she immediately descends into relentless tears that take twenty minutes to ease. I tried everything to make her calm down, and eventually she did.

Then I went out for a date with another friend, [livejournal.com profile] shemayazi. It was quite the incredible evening. After dinner at a cheap local pub, we went home and talked politics and shop, then went upstairs and proceeded to get completely messy, wearing each other out and running through at least three condoms. We were so lubed up that a shower was absolutely necessary in the end. Sheer bliss. The good kind.

She and her partner were also kind enough to gift me with their two dead computers, which I have dutifully parted out. I have DVD player, and a ZIP drive, and an SBLive, and even two floppy drives now. Both Kouryou-chan and I have been in need of floppies for a while. I need a new cable for the ZIP drive, but I'm sure I can manage. And one even came with an old monitor, which is good because Kouryou-chan's ancient Triniton monitor is so dark it's hard to see some things, but this one is crystal clear, even if it can't handle all the resolutions her card can put out. While parting out the boxes, I watched MI-5. Now that's a great show.

I went to bed happy.

Six hours later, I awoke with the absolute conviction that something horrible is happening. There is a rhythmic thumping sound, an unnatural sound, coming from somewhere in the house, and then a sickening, gurlgling noise, like a dog whining and coughing up blood, reaches my ears. Ignoring my own nakedness, I run out to the living room.

Omaha is having a seziure. A bad one. She's in the easy chair, but she has collapsed far enough down the chair that she's pounding the back of her head against the wooden arm of the chair. She's become wedged and cannot collapse any farther or roll, so her head is elevated upwards and she's drowning in her own spit. I quickly pull her out of the chair and onto the floor, ignoring the complaints from my wrist. She continues to twitch hard on the floor, rolling, but at least she's safe.

A few minutes later, she calms down. I recognize that one of her nails has been bent up and back at a sharp angle. I flick it back down and she reacts violently, pulling away from me, empty unaware eyes staring at the hand to which I've just inflicted such massive pain. I can tell from the way she's moving that she's wrenched her back again.

I know from past experience she will not remember me fixing her nail. Good. One less pain to deal with when consciousness returns.

Once she's capable of walking, I shamble her into bed. She wakes twenty minutes later and comes out, wondering why I'm up so early. I explain to her the seziure, and she's adamant that she's fine and doesn't remember it. I realize that she's still not all there.

After a while, I fix pain perdu, which is basically French toast made with stale, uncut bread, of which I have quite a bit, mostly Toscano brand "Italian" from the local supermarket. Kouryou-chan eats it up.

I send Omaha back down for another nap while I sit outside and man the garage sale. It's very slow today. I've ripped through about a hundred more pages of Feersum Endjinn, by Iain Banks.

I should go wake her up. She said no more than an hour's nap, and the alarm just went off.
