Weekendery Stuffery
Jun. 9th, 2008 09:47 am We started out Friday celebrating Yamaraashi-chan's birthday a few days late, first by taking her to her favorite restaurant where we went through the ritual of having the restaurant crew sing to her, and then we went to Toys 'R Us so Kouryou-chan could buy her a gift and we could size it properly, in this case safety gear for the inline skates she'd gotten at the birthday party at her mother's house. Omaha bought her pearl earrings (pearl being Yamaraashi-chan's birthstone) and I bought her some new clothes in styles we now know she likes.
Saturday, I had the entire day to myself while Omaha and
lisakit took the girls out to do girly things: pedicures and tea. I ended up working in a language I don't know, Ruby, re-writing my entire story site and trying to find just the right theme with which to show it. I still haven't hit just the right mix yet. I just don't have the design eye of some people, and it drives me crazy. Still, I'm getting closer, I think. More importantly, the functional layer is looking better and better. It'll probably chew up more CPU, but it'll allow for a huge host of features that I've been wanting for ages, the most important of which is automated archive updating.
Sunday was a hodge-podge of chores and stuff. Omaha went out doorbelling with Tina to drum up support. I finished a weekend project of rigging up a scrub brush to my drill. Cleans the bathroom almost instantly! It's a very simple project, too. Sleepy Dog has the details; I modified it by using a round-headed bold, two locking washers and a nylon-threaded bolt on the inside. It was a quicker to assemble and it works fine. I bet with a Dremel I could polish the bolt head smooth and then cover it with a latex dip layer to give it even more safety. I'm a guy. Any project worth doing is worth doing with power tools!
fallenpegasus came over to drop off a gift for the girls and ended up staying for dinner: we made halibut chowder, a lot, and very yummy. It was sunny in the afternoon, and the girls spent as much time as possible outdoors, although it's been really rough with Yamaraashi-chan. She has so much homework, and it just feels like a losing battle getting her to think about her work. A simple essay that should have taken her two hours took her all damned day because she didn't want to do it. It was a clash of wills. She was happy with our reaction: the paper was pretty good, but she doesn't believe that what she does ("Compare and contrast the author's style in two different books") really means anything or matters to anyone.
