Last night I was reading a rather trashy story (in the original Japanese, yay... okay, it was completely furigana'd, I cheat on my Kanji, I admit it, alright?) and had a flash of inspiration about what to do with one of my more complicated characters. I immediately scribbled down long paragraphs, inventing a boyfriend for her (a short, bearded man with long hands and features bronzed by a lifetime in the sun-- what the Hell is he doing on this starship? I need more backstory, dammit... scribble, scribble...), and basically trying to get her out of the deep and depressing funk I had left her in at the end of the last episode.

And then I had to stop and tell myself: No. I will not write the whole thing right here and right now. I have a commitment to The Temple, and then another one to the next Fragility episode. As touching and wonderful as this scene is, I will not flesh it out into full-length story. I have other things to do tonight. Sigh.

There are times when Leonardo Da Vinci Syndrome really, really sucks.

Hot on the flywheel-powered, mesobot-reinforced wellstone-repaired heels of my mentioning SRMD (That's Science Related Memetic Disorder, also known as "Mad Science Syndrome."), I learn that an organization out of Misouri, The Elliot Insitute (for some reason I'm reminded of Robin William's riff on the way ET walked in that execrable Spielberg film: "Elliot! Elliot! Ouch! I'm walking on my testicles!"), is seeking to ban transhumanism. You have to love the first image of a mother comforting her daughter, who's obviously traumatized beyond rational thought by the fact that Muffy down the street has better vision, recall, and hair than she does.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you...
