Omaha and I decided to take it easy this weekend after all of our babysitting plans sorta fell through. It sucked a lot because we were both hoping to go mountain biking, but we're hoping to find some arrangement later in the summer that'll work for us.

We spent a lot of time in front of our computers, and not all of it voluntarily. There was a ton of paperwork to get done, most of it of a serious nature, and Omaha with her strategic nature did the bulk of it. I'm more of a calculating, statistical sort, able to run the numbers and do the odds when advantage is clear, but she's the one with the Sun Tzu nature who can find advantages where none are apparent.

Friday night I got the joystick working under Linux, which means I can now play Descent (the original) and all of the MAME games that need a joystick. Omaha and I were up late playing Gauntlet-- yes, that Gauntlet.

Saturday, we had a frenzy of running about to get Omaha's medicines and stopped at a garage sale where I foolishly passed up an opportunity to buy some Bushnell field glasses for $10. Should have gotten them; I could use a decent set of field glasses. Got home just in time to head off to the Bi-&-Bi social, where I learned that one of the cuter guys is heading off to live in Arizona. Ah, well. Kouryou-chan was very well-behaved at the cafe', but she became bored and we headed home, stopping at Half-Price books to pick up a new copy of Quicken 2001 (the last edition Omaha and I trust). I found a copy of Descent 3 for $3 and, hey, the price was right, so I got it. I still have six bucks in store credit left after that. I was tempted to buy the Oxford American Dictionary CD so I could try and hack the format for use on my Linux laptop.

We met [livejournal.com profile] fallenpegasus at the social, and he followed us home, where we cooked barbecue: steak and lots of it, fresh corn-on-the-cob, baked potatoes. I love my little chimney starter; it's so nice compared to lighter fluid. Then Omaha and Pegasus watched some Red Dwarf videos while I put Kouryou-chan to bed and did some more hacking. I'm doing much more code-hacking than game-playing recently. This is probably a good thing.

Sunday, I made blueberry pancakes and then we went out to the local, kitschy Burien Strawberry Festival, where we had strawberry shortcake. It probably made a whole lot more sense when Burien was a strawberry farmer's town; these days they have to import most of the strawberries from farms to the east. The music was hokey and local but well-meant and earnest, and the nicknacks offered had an entirely different feel to them, a down-home impression unlike the ones at the University District street fair. The evil church that outdoes the Festival by setting up their own inflatable bouncy castle and slide and all to attract kids over then preach at 'em doesn't operate their scheme on Sunday, so I think we'll make a note to go on that day.

Kouryou-chan ate all the whipped cream off her strawberry shortcake and left the rest. When we got home, I lay down and napped for an hour. That was nice.

That evening, the neighbors had a birthday for their son and invited Kouryou-chan to help. Omaha and I switched off watching her. I like my neighbors, but it's hard to take them seriously when they're all so unbelievably god-soaked. Six kids with a seventh on the way. There were two young men there, nearly twins, one of whom was admantly reading his bible every chance he got; the other was wearing a Mr NW Drummer t-shirt, probably to tick-off his family. The only religious war of the evening, though, was a Windows versus Linux argument. They served really good chili, though.

I bathed Kouryou-chan and washed her hair. We had a very nice untangling ritual afterwards when she sat in my lap and I went, hair by hair, through her scalp, making sure her hair dried and set without knots. She was very patient and afterward stood in front of the mirror and said, "I look very pretty. Thank you, Daddy."

Then I read three books to her and put her to bed. She was a bit recalcitrant about the whole lights-out part, but eventually we did get her to stay put. I played about a half-hour of Half Life, then headed to bed myself.
