Friday night [livejournal.com profile] omahas went out with a friend, so [livejournal.com profile] jenkitty came over and helped me care for Kouryou-chan while I cooked up dinner. It was just a little thing-- Tuna Nicose' sandwiches (cooked tuna, Nicose' olives, capers, green beans to add crunch, on a bed of lettuce, stuffed into a pita, tossed with a blend of olive oil, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt) and potato salad (tossed with green onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, and the other half of the squeezed lemon).

(A little frugal gourmet here: total, this cost about two bucks a person. There is no excuse for not eating well in this country.)

Afterwards, I also whipped together some brownies, using Scharfenberger chocolate and no baking powder. Sinful in the extreme.

This was my first ocassion to spend any significant time in Jenkitty's company when she wasn't completely swamped with other people vying for her attention. Admittedly, she didn't get all of mine, not when Kouryou-chan walked into the kitchen while we were throwing dinner together and said, point blank, "Daddy, I want your attention," which made Jenkitty crack up.

Jenkitty is definitely one of those people who I'm inclined to like instantly; she's open and clever and comes across as just a little vulnerable, which is an incredibly attractive quality in any woman. She's so easy to talk to, bright and interesting.

Omaha came home and while she and her friend played Pente' (hey, someone who can actually defeat her!), Jenkitty listened while I put Kouryou-chan to bed. She's remarkably good with the little sprog after all, but it took a few tries to convince Kouryou-chan to actually go to sleep. She crashed readily enough once she'd lain down long enough.

(Grammar queen time: "Lain" is correct for the conjugation of the irregular intrasitive verb meaning "to be in a horizontal position," according to Learn English.)

Saturday, we rose late and rushed out to a playdate with friends so Kouryou-chan could spend some weekend time with kids her age. It was a good plan since Yamaarashi-chan wasn't over this weekend. While she and Omaha were there, I ran up to Bellevue to tutor an acquaintance on the finer points of C++. The habits of thought that go into object- oriented programming were in front of her, on paper, but she didn't have them in her head, and kept getting swamped with details. The basics of class-responsibility-collaborations that those of us who do OO take for granted didn't "click" with her.

I didn't get back to pick up Omaha and Kouryou-chan until 3:30pm, at which point it was so frickin' hot that we just went home to crash for a while, missing [livejournal.com profile] tabbifli's party. Kouryou-chan fell asleep in the car and stayed that way most of that terribly hot afternoon.

The adults didn't get that chance. Ants had invaded the kitchen. And not just a few. It was a swarm. A plague. A river of ants running over each other to get through this tiny crack in the rail under the window. They hadn't gotten into the staples, but were all over the composting box and into a stain of chocolate and sugar left from the night before. It was horrible. I had nightmares about it.

After running a bead of caulk over their ingress and then coating the window rail itself with permethrin, we cleaned out kitchen properly and I sucked the whole colony into the vacuum cleaner. During this adventure, [livejournal.com profile] fallenpegasus wandered by and waded in. Eventually, we got it under control and no ants have been seen since. I also mopped the floor with bleach and near-boiling water to get any attractive stains left by Kouryou-chan, who's always spilling cranberry juice on the floor.

After dinner of home-made pizza and then slipping Kouryou-chan into bed, I went and played Freespace for a while, and then we all headed to bed.

Sunday, after rising about 10 or so (Pegasus stayed so late he crashed on the couch again), we scrounged a breakfast of grapefruit, granola, oatmeal, and bananas, and then Pegasus gave Omaha a ride to the monthly meeting of a charity she's been with for years. Kouryou-chan and I cleaned up the kitchen and made our beds, then headed out ourselves to pick up Omaha and do monthly and weekly shopping trips: Costco and Safeway. Kouryou-chan was so bored that I felt sorry for her, but we encouraged her to help us with the shopping. She's getting an arm and can hurl a jug of peanut butter quite a few feet. Good thing they're made of plastic these days.

I played with Kouryou-chan in the back yard after we got home, doing squirt gun things and cleaning up the yard tools. She was thrilled to be able to squirt her parents. We tried playing Nerf baseball, but she couldn't quite get the bat to connect. I grilled hamburgers and chicken on the grill (y'know, those "chimney" firestarters are fabulous-- patience substituted for lighter fluid, and you can even use really old charcoal that got wet over the winter) while Kouryou-chan clambered about in the playfort out back.

I put Kouryou-chan to bed, bathing her and washing her hair, and reading "The Tale of Tiddly-Winkle" and "The Two Bad Mice" to her from the Beatrix Potter collection. I slept like a rock.

Just hearing about your weekend made me feel tired. I'd be lucky to get all that done in a single week!!!!

Then again it's a world of difference comparing Mel-boring, Florida to Seattle anyways. Everything and everyone down here tends to be slow. The hot weather doesn't help either.

There is an excuse for not eating well, and it is not knowing what the heck to do with a kitchen, a cookbook, and the stuff to put together. I never learned to cook, my mom basically heated up stuff and stuck it all together. So thats what I do now, heat stuff up in the microwave. I dont have the time and energy after getting home from a 9 hour day with 3 hour drive and Im amazed that you do. :) Especially people who also take care of a kid(s) when they get home, its just amazing. I could never do that.

On other subjects, maybe after Matt and I move back, if we are making enough to get by, I may ask if I could hire you to tutor me in OOP concepts as well. It (and design in general) an area Im extremely weak in because of my programming background and its something I really want to do better. If you have time then of course, I guess it kinda jumping the gun to suggest it now, but thought I should say something while I was thinking about it so I would remember. :)
