Battered and Bruised
May. 5th, 2003 09:22 amI am sore. There's a bruise about the size of my hand on my left thigh, another on my right bicep, one on the left pectoral, and a smattered rash of bruises across the back of my neck. I spent Sunday afternoon face down in mud among fallen logs, wet ferns, and sharp grasses, crawling over hillocks and through ditches, the gun in my left hand making annoying rattling noises that could only be masked by the sounds of a firefight twenty meters away. Omaha knew I was coming, but wasn't sure where I was until I popped up. She brought her gun up, but fumbled in the muddy ditch and I got off three rounds.
"Ow!"
Paintball r0x0rs. I managed to cap off two more people (one of whom suffered the ignominy of a misfire, or it would have been me leaving the battlefield) before taking three more, one in the facemask. We played round after round of elimination, in the cold and the rain. At first, I'd been worried that my hands would freeze up, it was cold enough for that, but after the first ten minutes I was sweating along with everyone else.
Don't wear white in the field. Black is probably just as bad. Nobody wore any camoflage, which probably would have been the ideal. We were all lame beginners, though, doing this for a lark on a friend's birthday. She turned out to be a pretty good shot, too. Omaha has a bruise on her thigh about the size, shape, and color of Saturn.
A fabulous way to spend an afternoon with friends. Thanks so much to those of you who helped make it possible!
