I've been Slashdotted!
Mar. 10th, 2003 01:56 pmApparently, I've been Slashdotted over the The Only Fair Game. Poor Larry. One mistake (mentioning it in Man Kz*n Wars IV, not slamming me) and it was all over.
Not that that's bad, mind you. I normally get about seven hundred story downloads a day. So far, TOFG was download 1600 times. I don't think that's going to overwhelm Drizzle's poor little server, which is a pretty robust commercial webhosting server, but it's nice to see that kind of traffic.
Now if only it would generate some donations, that would be something!

Date: 2003-03-10 03:51 pm (UTC)I'm somewhat grateful to Larry for the kick in the pants he gave me. He inspired me to write in my own universe, to come up with my own characters and situations. To get out from under the forms and restrictions of trying to write in someone else's pond.
And he's still among my favorite authors. I don't think I could do serious harm, nor do I think Larry could ever successfully argue that I've hurt his franchise. In an attention economy (http://www.redherring.com/insider/2003/01/copycats011003.html), I might have even done him a favor by providing a point about which once can ask, "What is all the fuss?"
All of my parodies are tongue only gently in cheek-- I do like all of the people I've made fun of-- Larry, Disney's Aladdin, The Thundercats-- I just think they all had flaws that were best illustrated by, um, example.

Date: 2003-03-10 05:29 pm (UTC)I wonder if I'm the only person that was familiar with Elf's work before I read any of Larry's. I was very pleased with myself when I finally found a used copy of Man-Kz*n Wars IV and got to read the introduction.

Date: 2003-03-10 05:54 pm (UTC)And, as you can see, I'm kinda fond of Elf's work. :)

Date: 2003-03-10 08:10 pm (UTC)And no, I'm not offended by your name choice. Puzzled, a bit, but he is a fictional character, all the same.
And those guinea pig costumes were painful. Why would you do that to a poor, innocent, furry animal?
(Don't answer that.)

Date: 2003-03-10 08:33 pm (UTC)And I am in no way connected to that bizarre guinea pig page. Some things are just too painful to bear witness to alone. :)
