So apparently my mother is in "truth telling" mode, and I learned another fascinating detail. My parents really, really wanted to discourage my interest in computer programming. It wasn't a profession they understood, they didn't think there would be any money it, they were sure I would end up broke and unhappy and miserable.

In my last post I revealed that, having no idea what to do with their geeky son, they packed me off to what they believed was a very traditional Episcopalian boarding school in the hopes that "they" could watch over me, and because it was in the middle of Penn Dutch country any "adventures" I would want to have would be too difficult for me to pratically go on one. And they took away my bicycle.

The irony there is that, due to a rather strange donor, the school I went to was the only school in the country with a fully functioning, student-operated PDP 11/44.

Also, apparently, in my last year at high school they agreed to buy me a personal computer. My dad reviewed all the literature, looked at the list of kinds of computers I wanted, and bought the one at the top of the list, an Amiga, because the literature all said it was just "an overpriced game machine" and not the sort of thing people really interested in computers bought.

Little did they know that the Amiga model I requested came with a complete copy of the kernel.

I guess that serendipity thing goes way back, huh?
