Time and Motion Study #1.

6:00 Watch alarm goes off. It's silent, vibratory. Tap it to shut it up. Get out of bed, bathroom, light candle, weigh myself, take meds. Dress (clothes arranged on hangers, on a hook on the bath door, the night before).

6:09 Phone alarm goes off, if the watch didn't work. Head to the kitchen. Fill with cold water the kettle, which was left open overnight to air out, and start it. Take out: two eggs, milk, shredded cheese (shredded Sunday night and put into a container for the week), bacon fat, and salsa. Grind two tablespoons of coffee in the hand-grinder, put into the medium-sized French press. Arrange a travel mug and a coffee cup next to the press, approximately three inches apart. While fetching the coffee cup, also fetch a sandwich plate.

6:15 Put the cast iron pan onto the stove, set the stove to HIGH, and set the oven timer for three minutes. Somewhere in here, the kettle will beep; pour water into the French press, the coffee cup and the travel mug. Start a timer on the phone for the coffee: 4 minutes.

6:18 When the oven timer goes off, put one level teaspoon of bacon grease into the pan and swirl. Toss in one handful of frozen vegetables (a random blend of commercially bought blanched onions, green peppers, and a stir-fry blend, all mixed together in a ziplock) and set the oven timer for three minutes.

In this three minute period, crack and scramble the eggs with a fork until they just seem to get a little more pale. The coffee timer will go off. Pour out the water from the now-heated cups, stir and press the coffee. Put a teaspoon of sugar into each cup, and pour the coffee into the travel mug first. The French press is a little wonky and sometimes coffee drips down the sides; hold it so that the drips fall into the other cup (hence the "three inches apart" above). Add milk if desired, and cap the travel mug.

6:21 The oven timer goes off. Check if the vegetables are done. If not, give them an extra minute. When they're ready, put them on the sandwich plate, add one teaspoon of butter to the pan, swirl, and add the eggs. Swirl to evenly distribute, gently shaking the pan if necessary. Sprinkle a small handful of cheese over one half of the eggs, then return the vegetables on top to finish. Gently fold the omelette over to cover, then fold in half again. Transfer to the sandwich plate.

6:26 Breakfast is served.
