I always have a half-dozen web projects going on at any moment, most of them on my laptop. I often forget where they are, virtually. "Is Omaha's first project on port 8101 or 8103? Where is Oxymoron run from? What about Kafka?"

I mean, the actual projects themselves are in my /projects folder, but since I run a lot of them out of Apache, it's hard for me to keep track of what port does what.

Since I've been studying a lot of interesting technologies like Coffeescript and Node, I wrote a little tool to probe all of the ports and show me the title that comes back: Port/Project.

Wouldn't it be easier to keep a list of projects/links on 80 on your box? One line per project, probably wouldn't change too often.

... probably wouldn't change too often.

They change all the time. Last week there were two changes: I added a Diaspora instance, and a new project of Omaha's. I make a good habit of setting the titles on home pages, and when implementing REST-style APIs having a text/html response. I don't want to manage a list by hand. Therefore...

The list would, but do you change ports often once they're assigned? Anyway, granted it's a bit of a bear, AND it is an excuse for some cool programming. :)
