Storm made dinner tonight. Delicious! Now she knows how to make tacos on her own. Ground beef sautee'd with garlic and onions, cumin and chili powder. We discussed more knife skills for doing tomatoes and lettuce, and she shredded the cheese.

It's not a hard thing, tacos. But it's way better than ramen noodles, and the objective is to give her and her sister feed-yourself skills in college.

I started to learn to cook for real, at around age 9. By the time I left home at 17, I was able to cook most basic things and had a couple of fancy dishes that I could use to impress guests.

I also knew how to buy food -- what to look for in meats, fish, and produce -- as well as when to take advantage of sales and bargains.

I think the ability to make sure one eats a good nutritious diet, and do it on a budget if necessary, is an essential human skill. In addition to every day meals, having a "party dish" or two in one's repertoire -- even something as straightforward as a nicely roasted chicken with seasonal veggies or a good vegetarian lasagna -- is important. There's something very good about being able to provide one's friends with a special meal for a special occasion.

So, yea, you're doing it right.

The cool thing about her knowing how to make tacos is she's a couple of minor formatting tweaks away from also knowing how to make taco salad and burritos, and sauteed seasoned ground beef is a few ingredients away from making a decent from-scratch spaghetti sauce.
Kudos to you both.
