I stopped by the dance studio today to tell them that Storm wasn't going to be attending her weekly dance class. The receptionist was on the phone, so while I sat and waited for her to finish her conversation I picked up a copy of the Dance 2011 catalog from one of the bigger dance costume companies. Dance costumes must be a big business, because this was a huge 202 page glossy 10x17 heavy-weight paper perfect-bind magazine, the expensive kind usually reserved for high-end fashion.

It took me a while to find the "guys" section. It was all the way in the back. Out of 206 pages, there were 4 pages of acessories, 199 pages of girl's clothes, and 3 pages of men's clothes.

Three pages? That's it? Women get hundreds and hundreds of variations, costumes, character types, and so forth, and men get... three pages of multi-colored tights in two patterns, along with three different cuts of vest with color options for sequins.

Jeez, no wonder guys don't want to go into dance. The industry's not interested in them, either.

I guess that might be a chicken-and-egg type problem.

Honestly, I think boys are screwed in the regular clothes department period, much less costumes. We get double because we'll wear what men wear but men, in the majority of them anyway, won't wear what women do.

Think of it as a consumer problem instead of a lure into dance problem. Less consumers means less choice.

Large chested women have the same problem when it comes to bras. A cups get all the pretty stuff, all the lace, all the colors, all the different cuts. Large chested women get four choices: black, white, nude, and ONE color, if we're lucky.

Men get the functional clothes! I'm not small, so my selection is limited as is. I cannot find warm knee-hi socks for the life of me. We get "trouser socks" - really thin crap or socks that only go up our leg a few inches (which then slides down to our ankles).

Yesterday I needed a new coat. I've been looking for a year casually and 4 months more seriously, but then the coat I've been using failed. Or I did or whatever...but I needed a new coat now.

Went to Burlington Coat Factory. It was the first time I'd ever been there and it was not what I expected. With a name like that, I expected lots of coats and coat accessories (scarfs/gloves and the such).

We almost couldn't find the coats. Woman's clothing, children toys, general crap. That's at the front. Someone finally pointed out that the coats were all in the back of the store.

We head back there. The women's coats were mostly short and "fashionable". I want warm. I want waterproof. I want a hood. Ended up having to buy a man's coat. I'm only 5 foot 2 inches so it's way broad in the shoulders and luckily the arms can be adjusted. It kind of bunches up around my face, but it IS very warm and was reasonably priced.

It was unbelievable that something that calls itself a coat "factory" had such little variety. Not all women want that cutsy crap or want to show their asses. And don't even get me started on sizing.
Sorry for the rant.
