A (now deleted) Tweet from an alt-rightie demanded to know, "Please explain how millions of pink hats were manufactured and delivered with military precision all on the same day!"

Two years ago, I went to visit a friend who was stuck at home caring for her husband, who had recently had a heart attack and was bedridden but recovering. The walk from the bus stop to her home was about four blocks, and when she asked me how I was I said fine but that my ears were freezing.

She made us tea while we caught up, and then pulled out a bag of yarn and a crochet hook. It's something she does. About twenty minutes later she presented me with a lovely hat long enough to cover my ears.

I still have it, too. It's not pink. I bet the biggest problem in making so many hats for the march was securing the yarn in the first place.

Yes, it was. I heard that a lot of places ran out of yarn, and some had to make theirs from maroon or some such close color. Also, a lot of people just sewed "pink ears" onto their pink caps. That would probably take about 10 minutes.

Yes, several places ran out of yarn. I bought yarn two weeks before the marches, and there were three skeins of anything that could reasonably be termed "pink" on the shelves, when there's usually 6-9 bins in different fiber contents. I sent my husband to buy some a week later and he found exactly two skeins at the same store, of the crappiest possible quality because everything else was gone. Two nights before the march, I had to go to three stores before I could find anything that could reasonably be termed "pink" (and I'm including all of the purples, pinks, maroons, reddish-pinks, pink-plus-other-color mixes, and even the red at that point). Our local paper commented on the shortages of pink yarn throughout Portland. I heard a comment on the national news about shortages of pink yarn in various cities throughout the country. It was impressive.
I was finishing up my last hat on the light rail ride to the march, and three people asked if I'd be willing to sell or trade it.

A lot of people used pink fleece. And there were at least two weeks from the time I first heard the term "pussy hats" to the March, and I heard of them late. The pattern was free online. This isn't difficult to conceive of, if you have half a brain, which obviously, that twit didn't.

I teach Handwork at a Waldorf school. So I have LOTS of yarn in my supplies. I had parents and middle school students asking me if they could buy some of my yarn as they couldn't find any anywhere else.
