Hate group The American Family Association has announced that it is calling for a boycott of L. L. Bean because the clothing manufacturer has decided to refer to "the Holidays" rather than "Christmas" in its 2010 catalog and related literature.

But the gays also want a boycott of LL Bean because one of its major shareholders, Linda Bean, uses her wealth to fund The Rushdoony-informed Constitution Party, a Christianist organization dedicated to the repeal of the Voting rights act and a return of American Law to Biblical Values.

Now, I'm conflicted, because in my darkest heart I like LL Bean stuff. And I was saddened when I decided I could no longer support LL Bean and its business. But now that they've declared War on Christmas, and the AFA is opposed to them, is it okay if I just buy a few things?

L. L. Bean wearables don't fit me, because I don't conform to the proper size for red-blooded Amurrican wimmenfolk (even when I was thin, things *still* didn't fit properly, because I have hips and a waist), so they haven't been on my radar for years and years.

Dude. Buy Eddie Bauer instead. They're *local*, and their stuff is more suited to our winters than the ones back East. (And they also do custom hems on enough varieties of jeans and pants to keep me happy. You *cannot* buy 26" inseams off the rack! But on eddiebauer.com? It's as easy as a drop-down menu.)

Even better, you can take the long way when going to visit [livejournal.com profile] codeamazon and hit the outlet in Woodinville. CHEAP!

Or whatever you call a polo with pocket over the left breast.
Ditto for pocket Ts.
Most of the sweat shops seem to refuse to do knit shirts with pockets, so I take them from wherever my wife can find them.

It's my belief that boycotts should generally be based on the actions and 'opinions' of the company itself.

Shareholders are entitled to their private opinions, and unless they move company policy towards things like firing gay employees, meh. I doubt there are many companies (or parties) where I'd agree with everyone present.

On the other hand, I would be concerned if L.L.Bean applied pressure to to a stockholder's private activities. That would be a corporate "opinion" that would bother me.

Coincidentally I shopped there tonight, something I virtually never do. I had a gift certificate, and they had two items I really wanted to give as gifts. Shipping is free right now, no minimum.
