Okay, that's it. I can't watch anymore of this. Kuroko's too smart to be this stupid, and too stupid to be this clever. The whole episode was built on girders of fail.

There's got to be something worth watching in this vein this season, ne?

I should have warned you off watching episode 2... It gets better, really, but it remains railway-line formulaic in terms of plot and story. The characterisation doesn't improve; Kuroko remains an overreaching little stalker-type and Mikoto remains somewhat standoffish. Touma, the love interest doesn't change either but he is usually worth watching for his "Poor me!" schtick and Mikoto's desperately doomed-to-failure attempts to kill or cripple him are some of the funniest bits of the series.

If you're wanting something less stupid and Kurokoish than Railgun but with that sort of a flavour, I'd recommend "Dennou Coil". It won the Seiun Award (the Japanese National SF Convention) for best anime in 2007. Kids play in a VR world under the noses of the adults, forming allegiances and fighting minor wars for domination, trading and dealing in tokens and valuables. It runs a bit too long at 26 episodes but within it there is some good plotting and imaginative storytelling.

At the risk of being obtuse, which vein were you looking for?
Wonderful complex character interactions? Ookami-san and her 7 companions.
Really big explosions? Star Driver. (Really really over the top!)
Complex setting with odd sci-fi-ish overtones? Durarara.
Bizarre "high school" setting? Star Driver again.
Hot hot girl on girl action? Ummm.. I have heard MM! is good but have not seen it yet.
Also, my fellow commenter is correct in that episode 2 is by far the worst in the series. The show doesn't really start to pick up until later on, but 2 is easily the worst one.
