It's a Trap!
Oct. 19th, 2010 09:34 amYou know what pisses me off more than anything else about working with Amazon AWS? The fact that nowhere on their account management page is a "pay now" button. Here are the options presented on the accounts page:
I think Amazon doesn't care because it knows that AWS is one of those things that, like the Isilon IFS, once you're on, you can't afford to switch off. Your site grows by leaps and bounds, and by the time you realize you've got to migrate elsewhere, you're plugged into an architecture that requires man-months to disentangle.
Admiral Ackbar would be yelling.
- View current charges and account activity, by service and usage type.
- Create multiple Users and manage the permissions for each of these Users within your AWS Account.
- Sign up to receive one bill for multiple AWS accounts, and add or remove accounts from your bill.
- View revenue and costs for your manageable Amazon DevPay products.
- View and edit current payment method, as well as add new payment methods.
- View and edit personal contact information and set communication preferences for email subscriptions.
- Download customizable usage reports for each service you are subscribed to.

Date: 2010-10-19 10:23 pm (UTC)A friend was using one of the spare boxen to surf the web and spotted something on ebay she wanted. Went to bid on it and this flash slideshow bar of the sellers other products popped up across the middle of the screen. Completey covering the box she needed to enter her bid in.
No way to close it, no way to get the the bidding pop-up that was hidden behind it. It too her over 10 minutes to come up with some combo of keyboard and mouse stuff to get at that box she needed.
There was a fair bit of screaming at the screen while she worked at it too.
To top it off, she tried to find a way to report the problem to ebay and found that (in essence) you *can't*.
Of course, I've loathed eBay's UI for years. Things like the help menus requiring you to click on what I finally realized where supposed to be arrow and *not* having the text blocks they pointed at *also* be links is just one example.
