“Hot Text”

And while we’re on the topic of helping users discover the rest of your website, I can’t help but recommend Lisa and Jonathan Price’s Hot Text, a fabulous book thick with examples on how to shorten, tighten, punch-up, clarify and atomize your documentation so that it’s easier to use and re-use in different contexts such as gamification. The book is ancient by Internet standards, published in 2002, and frequently available in used bookstores. Although much of the information is pre-DITA, the basic approaches and guidelines are too useful to ignore.
Their website, however, looks so dated and misaligned that I can’t help but wonder if the Prices understand anything about the web other than documentation design.
