Few things annoy me more than obvious grammar fail, such as this masterpiece spotted at the Seattle Aquarium: "The Hawaiian islands form a very unique ecological habitat."

Uh, Mr. Interactive Specialist, the word unique is already superlative. "Very" only weakens the point you are trying to make.

Yeah, I think they meant "unique in very many ways" or "very different from anything else" or some other measure of "degree of difference". I don't know that there's a word for that, and "unique" is often used for the concept, although it really just means "single example of".

There's probably a better word choice, but I can't actually think of one (short of spelling it out in many words). Do you know of a word that would actually fit the point they were trying to make? It's been bugging me for a while.

Hey, if the USA can be "more perfect", Hawaii can be "very unique."
