On July 5th, Omaha and I pulled the plug on Direct TV. We didn't watch enough television, we got plenty through Hulu, YouTube, various legit outfits, and when we wanted movies we had our NetFlix queue.

Over the next three days, we received seven calls from Direct TV Customer Retaliation Retention, begging us to come back. They'd slash the price to half, no a third!, of what we were paying before.

We finally just started hang up on them. But Caesar's Ghost, people, when someone says 'no' the third time, don't go asking a fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh time. That's the kind of crap my ten-year-old pulls.

Tell them "take me off your list." And if that doesn't work? "Washington has a very strong anti-stalking law. How would you like to go to jail?"

I actually had to use that one on a now-very-former client whose last call to me was at 0657. It worked.

One or two over-zealous mobile phone carriers here in the UK have been known to do this.

This is making me wonder if I should cancel my directv account if they're going to offer deals like that.

I can top that. When I cancelled my Analog subscription after 2 years, they called WEEKLY to ask me to reconsider. Then they stopped after 7 months. Then, out of the blue, after 2 years they called me again. I actually yelled at them asking if they honestly were still harrassing me about renewing a subscription I cancelled over two years earlier. Poor gal on the phone simply hung up on me; I felt bad, but my God how often do you have to say you don't have the time to read anymore and the magazines pile up?

Oddly, I occasionally buy one and read it on my iPhone.

Omaha and I were very early adopters of DirectTV. I imagine that losing us has got to hurt. On the other hand, maybe they should appreciate that we're early adopters and leaping to Internet services shouldn't be unexpected.

i do not own a television set. have not for at least 5 years.
every time i move, and sign up for cable internet, i have to deal with folks who cannot believe i don't have one. the cable company people have finally left off bugging me this time. i feel lucky, it only took 8 months. this time.
when people ask if i've seen the latest tv episode of whatever, and i tell them i am tv-less, they look at me as if i've seceded from the human race.
i tell them 'i read. books.', and that scares them even more. [as well it should.]

I've got a rather long-ish story about showing comcast the door, (it ends with a company representative asking me if i was really an American) but it seems like quite a lot of companies have an established policy of "OH, you're serious about quitting us? here's a half-price (or better) deal for half a year or longer!!!"

The corollary, of course is for those markets where they *know* there isn't another option for that location/area.

With NetFlix and Hulu the "What do you mean you don't own a television/cable?" looks are getting less and less in my life.

Actually, there's a worse department to come to the notice of - collections.

My cell number used to belong to someone ran off and stopped paying. Took weeks and a silent ringtone on the cell phone before they stopped bothering me.

We have a TV. We don't watch tv. Netflix. Game Consoles. Our DVD collection. That's it.

Ok, ok, the Superbowl. Other than that, why bother?

I had BMG call and ask if I wanted to rejoin their CD club, 6 years and two phone number changes since I had been a member, with no contact in between.

We also still get mail and phone calls looking for my wife by her maiden name. (after 11yrs of marriage)

Blood Centers of the Pacific does this. As a charity, they aren't legally required to keep a "do not call" list. It sucks. They have my cell number.

"Your next phone call will legally be harassment and you will personally be sued."

then

"Manager, please. Mr. Manager, your employees were told 'Your next phone call will legally be harassment and you will personally be sued' and they called back. YOU are liable. Could I please have your last name and attorney's name?"

In my Analog magazines lately (e.g. page 61 of the May 2010 issue),
I've been seeing notices headed "REPORT UNWANTED TELEMARKETING CALLS."

The notices imply that Analog customers have recently been getting
fraudulent phone calls trying to sell supposed subscription renewals or new subscriptions.
But to complicate things, one other company is authorized to sell
renewals by phone.

Some highlights:
- If a company calls you and asks for your credit card or checking information to buy Analog subscription, it's fraudulent.
- The notice asks you to report questionable calls to 800-220-7443
- The notice encourages you to sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry.
