Lighting them off
Well, after all the daytime activity, we got home and decided to not go out to see the fireworks. It was raining when we got home around 7pm, and although dusk wasn't until 10:15 or so we still thought it prudent to avoid the rain.

Up until about 10, I thought that was a bad decision. The rain had stopped. Things were drying up. We went outside to light sparklers.

And then it started raining again. Well, my prudence was rewarded. None of us will be getting drenched while watching an under-funded light show at a city presentation with no band and no vendor space— the city couldn't afford those this year.

Still, the sparklers were fun. Our neighbors clearly have access to illegal fireworks, as they're going boom and bang in volume sufficient Omaha has called the cops.

But sparklers are still legit.

Sparklers!

Darwin?

Am I the only one who thinks illegal fireworks are Darwinian? My neighbor drives over state lines to buy stuff, and at least one of his kids catches a stray spark burn every year...

Actually, the greatest source of fireworks injuries is FROM sparklers.

The CDC has a great site for fireworks statistics.

The majority of injuries, 900, occur from firecrackers (most from small ones) where the injuries are burns, foreign objects in eyes or other body parts, bruises and cuts.

The second largest is from sparklers, at 800, where the injuries are burns only. So not only are sparklers slightly less injuries statistically, but the damage that they can do is much less than firecrackers.

Rockets were third at 300.

The stats are all from 2008.
