Neil Gaiman was the last straw. This morning Gaiman tweeted: "Vaguely disappointed to learn that BP’s 'top kill procedure' will leave its entire executive strata alive."

In the past few days, as the procedure for top kill has been publicized, I've heard Bill O'Reilly suggest the entire staff of MSNBC be shoved down there to block up the hole, and Stephanie Miller suggested O'Reilly and Limbaugh together might be enough, and there have been other attempts at "comedy" with suggestions of, basically, murdering groups of people and using their bodies as raw materials.

I understand that emotions are high, but can we please stop wishing, even as a joke, for the painful deaths of people who, whatever their failings and responsibilities, don't deserve that level of hatred?

[livejournal.com profile] ladyallyn had a somewhat more useful suggestion. Methinks said execs, rather than being subjected to a fate that only others *might* learn from, ought to be sentenced to 2000+ hours of community service - on the front lines of the environment they laid waste to. Perhaps getting one's hands in the oil *every* *day* (and then laying in bed at night wondering what exposure to said toxicity is going to do to their health months and years and decades down the road) would drive the lesson home constructively.

And, oh, yeah, those bonuses? Forfeit to the cleanup effort. Besides, what will they need with them? They're going to be busy cleaning birds.

Elf: {grumble} .... OK but couldn't we just take the 2000 hours idea and multiply it by 40 or 50?

That would not bother me in the least.

Alas, Neil seems to be going the way of the stupid, or at least the willfully ignorant.

It's a culture that worships violence and detests sex. :-(

I thought Neil's comment worked because it turned around an obviously PR generated name that spent at least as much time in focus group testing as the operation itself did in engineering review. I'm sorry, but when the corporate marketing hacks start generating names like "Top Kill", if it doesn't star Tom Cruise chewing up the scenery and gross at least $80 million on opening weekend then all bets are off.
