The U-6 is defined as the "Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers. Marginally attached workers are persons who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not looking currently for a job. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule."

That number, of which I am part, currently stands at 17.5%

Well, if I recall correctly BushCo was trying to only report "New Unemployment" or something for the longest time. Not QUITE as impressive as them trying to record fast food jobs under "construction"...

Yup, we've broken the '92 recession levels and are now in striking distance of the '82-'83 unemployment highs, which are the highest level in the 1948-current data that's available.

I know, and I'm sorry. But it's really bugging the Hell out of me, since I've now been struggling for eight months without much goodness. I was glad to see you were being productive today, though.

As I keep saying to people:

"I have a PhD in Physics. I've been developing software for the past 11 year, the last 5 in the financial industry. And I'm having trouble finding a job.

So no, Things Are Not Getting Better."

I worry far more, though about those without at much experience and education as me.

Ya, from WorkSource, "I just can't understand why your resume isn't getting second looks"

Oh, did I also mention i live in the greater NYC area?

Not exactly a 1-employer town.

The reason why your/my resume isn't getting a second look is because the few employers with openings are on unicorn hunts.

Things are bad here too.... and yet banks which are now 80% owed by the taxpayers give outrageous bonuses

How about an unemployment rate of 28.3% ??

In Anacostia, a good sized section of Washington, DC, the current unemployment rate is 28.3%.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/local/Unemployment-stats-paint-a-tale-of-two-cities-8492016-69332382.html

Most of the residents of Anacostia are mostly poor to working class blacks who usually do not have beyond a high school education so they can't get the kind of jobs that are being created that need a college degree and such.
