I don't get Sasha Grey
Oct. 26th, 2009 07:14 pmI don't get porn actress Sasha Grey.
It's hard not to be aware of Sasha. She's Fleshbot's Supreme Commandress, and they love showing her every chance they get. She's been in something like thirty porn films in the two years since she turned 18, her youth makes her a very hot commodity, and she is more than a little attractive. (I like my women to be a little more substantial [NSFW], although picture number two of this Sasha Grey gallery [NSFW] shows an angle of Sasha that, um, inspires me.)
In interviews I've seen with her, she comes across as smart, canny, and a little manipulative. She says, and I have no reason to doubt her, that she knew she liked sex, especially nasty sex, at a young age, and when she hit 18 she was well aware that it was the porn industry that would not only let her have all the sex she wanted, but gave her a chance at wealth and fame at the same time.
The other day, I finally rented a film of hers (Sasha Grey: Superslut), and I have to say that, as a performer, the best word for her is android. She's has a porn persona left over from the 1990's: plastic, artificial, full of auto-narrative that, intended to convince the watcher of her sincerity, instead has the exact opposite effect. Really bad lines like "Slam that cock into me" and "You like the feel of my ass, don't you?" shouted across the studio with the same emotion contained in "Ow! I stubbed my toe" or "I have to put money in the parking meter!" just make her seem like a plasticene doll and not a real human being enjoying a real human moment.
Maybe it's what the director wanted for that particular film. I haven't seen anything else with her in it. But it just seemed so fake that I'm boggled by her popularity, and I'm a bit turned off from seeing any more of Sasha Grey.

Date: 2009-10-27 01:48 pm (UTC)Most of my porn these days, such as I have time for, is rather outre', gay and lesbian (not "girl on girl") stuff from Hot Desert Knights and the Crashpad series, as well as some "straight"-ish stuff from Kink.com (which Sasha has done, but I haven't seen). There's an earnestness to much of it that you don't see in the more "genteel" titles. Sasha just doesn't seem earnest.

Date: 2009-10-27 04:40 pm (UTC)Similar to your experiences, her porn does nothing for me. I thought some of her stand-up podcast-like YouTube things were interesting, although she's not quite as well spoken as I'd hoped, but her porn seemed, if anything, physical accomplishment based.
I think that's true of much mainstream porn anyway. All I really have to compare against is the occasional YouPorn and RedTube freebie, but I think most of the "will pay for porn" audience wants that relatively wooden portrayal of female sexual experience. Occasionally I'll stumble across something niche that actually has what I perceive as real emotion in it, a lot of the Kink.com stuff is that, amateur stuff, although it's hard to find for free and usually has awful lighting, but I think that most porn consumers don't really want to watch human beings, and Sasha Grey is smart enough to give them what they want.
