To understand this, you have to appreciate that the little civil war within the right has started to metastasize with accusations of who's a real conservative and who's not flying fast and furious. Commentor David Frum (who's in a real "pox on all your houses" tear after leaving NRO, having decided NRO is too crazy for him), writes:
Suppose an agent arrived in the offices of Limbaugh/Beck/Hannity/O’Reilly etc. with an offer. “I can guarantee you a deal that will pay you twice as much – bring you twice as much fame – and extend your career twice as long – if you’d say the exact opposite of what you are saying now.” Which of them would sign?

My nominations: O’Reilly accepts for sure. Beck likewise almost certainly says yes. Limbaugh would want to think it over, but would ultimately say no. Mark Levin: certainly not. Sean Hannity would need the offer explained a few times. Ann Coulter – that one puzzles me – but probably no. Roger Ailes? Do you even need to ask?
Coulter, I think, is either a left-wing plant or there's a serious disconnect in her brain. I think Malkin takes it, if only because she's seduced by success and adulation, and that's what the devil is promising her here. The bit about Hannity had me giggling.

So, interesting thought: who on the left would take that offer?

Olbermann in a heartbeat, obviously. Ditto Oprah and Richard Cohen. Taibbi, probably. Rosie O'Donnell, see Hannity, passim. Michael Moore would seriously consider it, but probably not. Jon Stewart, not a chance.

Colbert, maybe. Maddow, not a chance. Ron Reagan, probably not. Ed Schultz would only listen about half way through, cut the guy off, come to an erroneous understanding of the offer, but would take it. Stephanie Miller would probably take it, be embarrassed by it for about a year, and then would warm to her subject and enjoy it thoroughly.

I disagree about Olbermann. His current life issues (Mother died a short time ago, dad in the hospital having serious issues) are very much in tune with the current left politics. Try back when the next issue roles around - it would depend then.

Matthews probably wouldn't, not so much because he's a believer so much as that he sees himself as the natural heir to guys like Cronkite, Brokaw, and Russert, and taking that deal couldn't be reconciled with that self-image.

For some years I followed "The Exile" (exile.ru; more recently exiledonline.com -- the publication where Taibbi, so far as I know, got his start as a somewhat widely-read journalist) and I get the impression that Taibbi so enjoys getting to write whatever the %#$^% he wants that he wouldn't accept the offer.

Having heard about Coulter's father (who she worships) being a McCarthy fan, she wouldn't budge. She's a believer.

Limbaugh wouldn't unless he got more famous then everyone else with his new opinion ("It's not that I win, I must beat everyone else. ")

If you can convince Beck it's not a plot to get him, he would,no question

Malkin would take it because her handler told her to. Oddly, if she DID flip it probably WOULD double her popularity...

That's just it with Beck, he's genuinely a wing-nut. I don't think anyone could offer him that kind of money to do a 180, and have him not lead off his next show with it as proof that a vast, left-wing conspiracy is trying to silence him.

EXACTLY! That's it in a nutshell, pun intended!

If he's just doing an act, then the man has started to drink his own Kool-Aid. Like an undercover-cop who's gone too deep to come back.

You're not the first one to wonder if Ann Coulter isn't some sort of double-agent. She certainly seems smart enough? Definitely far smarter than Glenn Beck, without a doubt. But as [livejournal.com profile] mouser points out, she probably isn't a double-agent.
