Don't tell Yamaraashi-chan, who's recently mentioned than on a trip to her uncle's place she developed a taste for coffee (she's in middle school, for Set's sake, kids shouldn't be drinking coffee like that), but while I was at Whole Foods this morning I spotted a line of Twilight series coffees, taglined "Stay awake with the Vampires." Uh-huh. The sparklie vampyres, as Geoffrey Chaucer put it.

I mentioned this to the guy running the checkout, and he said, "I know. It's awful, isn't it? And we have People and Us on the stands now. What's happening to us?"

I dunno, but man that's sad. Roasted in Forks, Washington, the bags say, although it's produced by the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie, which is more famous for its $375/lb "heirloom" blends than these silly (I can't call them cheap at more than a dollar an ounce) knockoffs.

I am more than a little unsettled that over the past year, Younger Child has developed a taste for coffee as well. At this point, it's not so much her age (she's nearly 18) as it is her hardcore preferences: she likes a strong roast, black. No sugar, no nothing. She says it ruins "the complexity and natural sweetness" inherent in a good cup. I can't figure out when she learned to talk like that about coffee!

At my local Whole Foods, the cheese shop folks complained to me that they're standardizing their cheeses across all Whole Foods, so that wherever you are, you'll get the same cheeses. No local flavors, just uniformity.

I'm not sure if WF is getting worse or if I'm just paying better attention.

I actually like that I can get some local (to me in the SF bay area) Cowgirl Creamery at the Whole Foods in Washington. However, when I really want some cheese, I'll drop down to the place in Pike Place.

There is a market near me that, I think, carries only local cheese: http://rivervalleymarket.coop/

I certainly don't recall seeing anything from more than, say, 500 miles away.

Coffee has by far LESS caffiene than Mt. Dew. I'm a bad parent and allow my kids to drink soda including those with caffiene. Why is coffee any worse? Neither of mine drink coffee however the younger does like a sip of my mocha on occassion. Then again I allow my kids a finger taste of alcohol if they are curious and the younger likes everything she tastes... hmmm.

Hrm, I'm not sure that's right. From what I can tell on the web, Mountain Dew, or "MTN DEW!" as they label it now, has about 4.6mg of caffeine per ounce (yes, I'm mixing units!). Coffee has 9-25mg or more, so at least twice and maybe as much as five times as much caffeine as Mountain Dew. Not counting decaf, of course.

However, despite coffee having higher concentrations of caffeine, Mountain Dew could still end up with higher amounts of caffeine depending on such factors as cup or bottle size. I know that a 16 oz. bottle of Jolt cola used to advertising itself as having the caffeine of two cups of coffee, but then again I've seen 64 oz. coffee mugs so that could go either way.
