Nits are weird things. I slept in the same bed with my sister for weeks and she never got them whereas I spent time with my at the time boyfriend and got reinfected. :(

Mix 1/2 cup of olive oil with 4 drops tea tree oil. Cover the hair with it and rub it in good. Put a shower cap on and let sit 2 hours.

Basically the bugs and the nits smother to death. But you have to really soak the hair good. This is why lice don't generally like people with oily hair - this makes everyone's hair oily so no bugs.

Also a common issue that causes reinfestation is rewearing shirts, sweaters and hoodies. You have to require everything be washed after each wearing to halt the bugs from coming back. My youngest has this problem from time to time herself, so I'm fresh from the battle myself.

Picking the nits *very* thoroughly -- I did it twice a day -- works better than any kind of poison. Get one of the good metal combs, not the cheap plastic kind they give away with the shampoo, and get ready for some quality time with your hair.
