So, Yamaraashi-chan had her annual physician's check-up today. Nothing big to report there; she's as healthy as ever, although her doc wants her to do something sports-related. She's the least physically fit of all of us Sternbergs here. The doc says that I obviously have a better and more communicative relationship with Yamaraashi-chan, even if Yamaraashi-chan thinks I'm "embarassing!" (the exclamation point is necessary) sometimes, than most of the parents she's seen come through her offices.

After the doctor's visit, we walked across the street to a pizza-by-the-slice place that I used to visit often when I lived in the West Seattle area. It's still good pizza. Then we got into the car, I turned the key, and... nothing.

Arrggh. After waiting it out about half an hour to see if the battery would come back long enough for me to get it going, I finally drew the attention of a guy at the construction office next to the restaurant, and asked him for a jump. Jumping my car is always nerve-wracking because I almost never do it, but it started well enough, thanks to his big and ancient Ford pickup, and I drove the car to Firestone where it promptly died again.

I wasted my entire afternoon over a dead battery. Bleah! This was not how this day was supposed to go. I was supposed to get a lot of work done, followed by a leisurely evening of cooking tacos and hanging out with the kids. Instead, I had a hot, boring afternoon with Yamaraashi-chan who, bless her heart, had a book big enough to keep her from being too bored while we waited for the car to get fixed. Well, I guess that counts as spending time with the kids.

It's never too late for tacos!

BTW - I know you don't see many ads so you probably don't know that Hyundai is offering monthly cash-back options on select models. Here's a sample.

Feh. Now that he's invested in a new battery, the little Escort will probably run quite a while longer. They're not bad little cars, unlike the Taurus from that era... they're not Japanese, but they're not Yugos either.

No, now is SO not the time to buy a new car. For anyone!

Back in the 70s and 80s they had a scam. They would steal the battery from a car. Then, when the owner replaced the stolen battery, they would steal the new battery again, getting themselves a brand-new battery in the process. I got hit by this scam once :(

Think the college I went to got hit by something similar. Someone stole the chips out of the boxes in at least one computer room, and then a week or two later did it again after they had been replaced. This was apparently back when the chips were the most valuable part of the computer, and they're certainly the eaiiest to carry out with you while you're escaping.
