I'm trying to cycle through the stages of grief as fast as I can so I can get down to the nitty-gritty of finding new work. I'll have to spend next week polishing my resume', building up my accounts on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Monster, and so on. I'm thinking that maybe I'll have some time to review any open source projects that have been lingering and see what's salvageable and what's not. Seam and Plotlines might be salvageable; Toxic is probably not.

You know what I hate most? The fucking euphemism. "We've made deep, deep cuts in engineering and your position was eliminated." Not "You were laid off," or "We're letting you go," but "Your position was eliminated." Well, at least it wasn't personal, and I'll have some unemployment insurance coming soon, I hope. We'll see.

Thank you, all.

In Taiwan they have an even worse one. It translates into something like "Extended furlough" or "Involuntary Vacation."

My company just did a round this morning, after some reorganization and holding out as long as possible, though I've been spared.

I usually give myself two days of moping followed by a couple of days of "do stuff around the house." Then I hit the jobhunt hard because by then I'm bored out of my skull.

I'm so very sorry. :(

If you don't know (I didn't the time I should have) you have to file unemployment promptly. Your filing date matters, at least in Oregon, in terms of when it kicks in.

What she said.

You should file online TODAY, which would make next week your mandatory "wait" week. If you delay filing until Monday, the following week would be your "wait" week.

commiserations and grokking in abundance; indeed, get ducks in a row regarding post-employment paperwork since the manky barstids who could help you tend (nowadays, alas) to be unable to volunteer useful information unless directly asked about programmes and benefits.

best of luck in the search for the next gig, heya?

Around here, they call it a "resource action." The people who work for my company are resources, and the "action" of making a bigger number into a smaller number is a force of nature. It's something that "just happens," something that no one person is responsible for. It's all very impersonal, very passive.

You have a nimble mind, and you are thorough and driven. You'll find something suitable soon!

I'm not particularly fond of the impoersonal euphemism, either. It seems so cold. Not "sorry we had to lay you off" but whatever euphemism is au courant today in HR.

When I was laid off at Apple in 1997, Steve Jobs had just come back and decided to make many, many cuts, including cutting all independent QA and wrapping the remaining QA into the engineering teams. However, Gil Amelio was still president, so I said we'd been Amelio-rated... it spread.

In that case, it was not "your position has been eliminated". It was "your department and every other department like it has been eliminated." But we got good severance and extended use of one of those "outplacement" firms (something like 2-3 months). I landed at IBM. IBM trained me and sent me up here. After a few months, they called me back home to a new assignment, but I decided I didn't like living in the Bay Area any more and wanted to live here, so I packed up house and husband (after a fashion) and moved. You know most of the rest.

While I know its of no comfort at this time, at least you're in good company ;) I have the added benefit of being "downsized" so many times in the last 8 years that it has started to become routine. Believe it or not, there are some who are still using that hideous term.

Hope your search goes well.
