Journaling the weekend...

Aside from being sick all day Friday and losing power Sunday evening, not a lot happened. Saturday morning I felt well enough to go with Omaha to Kouryou-chan's school and do the monthly maintenance thing. I checked all the gutters-- no work this time, really-- and then started trimming back the blackberry bushes behind the school's gymnasium. Somewhere in there, I ran Kouryou-chan over to her dance school. The end of dance practice coincided with the end of the work party, so we ran home, changed clothes, and then the whole family ran to the bookstore to buy gifts for one of Kouryou-chan's friends, because he was having a birthday party, which we then took Kouryou-chan to.
I drove Omaha home, and lay down until it was time to go pick the kid up. When I got back to the house where the birthday party was being held, they weren't done, so I got to watch the end of the "mad science" magic show that the mom had hired. It was pretty good, actually, and I have to say that's the first time I've seen a violet wand used outside of an S&M dungeon. (He had a metal tip on it and was using it to stimulate various lightbulb devices, showing off the arc to the delight of the children.) I discovered that "Mad Science" is a franchise for children's entertainers based in Washington.
The evening was much quieter. I played a round of Stratego with Kouryou-chan. We read a lot. The kid went outside to play with her friends. When it got dark, Omaha and I agreed that neither one of us wanted to cook much, but there weren't many leftovers and we didn't want to go out to eat.
So, for "not wanting to cook," I ended up chopping tofu and scallions, mixing 20oz of chicken stock with a tablespoon of miso, and having soup. Omaha sautee'd some chicken and mixed a sweet curry and made sandwiches for herself and Kouryou-chan.
After a Sunday breakfast of pancakes, we were off to another birthday party, this time at the roller skating rink. Now, this was unfortunate, because Kouryou-chan has convinced herself she'll never be a good roller-skater. She was miserable much of the time. She was great when she was off the rink with her friends, singing the songs and doling out the presents, but not when we got back into the rink. I eventually went out there with her, and took her around a couple of orbits. It took me a minute to get my legs underneath me, but eventually I was able to escort her around at a fair clip, and she did okay but she was constantly worried that she was going to hurt herself.
