Baby, It's Cold Outside!
Dec. 18th, 2008 10:20 am Ignorance is sometimes not so blissful. I woke up this morning, looked out my window, and saw no snow upon the ground. This, despite the fact that the newspapers had been warning us for three days that "It'll snow tonight, no really, trust us!" So I decided to head into work.
I boarded my bus, we got onto the freeway at 142nd and between 142nd and 128th, the skies opened up hard. The city came to a standstill. The freeway into the city turned into a parking lot. The bus I was on was particularly packed and warm, but tempers held up during a drive stretched from 25 minutes to almost 80.
I got into downtown and it was a mess. Within three blocks of 1st Ave, the downhill slope from Pike Place Market to Pioneer square, there were two jacknifed buses, one of which had jumped the curve and taken out a tree, and another scene of one bus having rear-ended another.
The 15 stopped at the Seattle Art Museum, and I jumped on. The snow was coming down harder than before, in big fat flakes that obscured everything. Oddly, the sidewalks were very walkable, but 1st Ave was a sheet of ice. Made it into the office. There's maybe 1/5th of the usual staff here, and I'm probably going to try and head home soon.
