It was a lovely Sunday after all. I took the girls to a Christmas Tea at [livejournal.com profile] tabbifli's house, and we gave a lift to [livejournal.com profile] lisakit. [livejournal.com profile] omahas, sadly, had to stay home to work and attend a meeting. The drive was terrible; winter rains have settled over the city with its usual nastiness. We landed at Alex and Tabbi's house and noshed and drank tea and had a good time, and I met a few other people whose names I don't remember or don't have knowledge that it would be okay to mention on-line. Lisa brought a delicious stew, there was a wonderful potato salad, and the scones were fabulous.

I covet a plug-in quick-boiling pot like Tabbi's.

"Evreyone."
Eventually, the party wound down. I don't have much knowledge of City of Heroes, sadly, and couldn't participate in much of the conversation, and it was time to go anyway. We drove home. On the way, I saw this photo and yes, I take some pictures just to mock them.

I dropped Lisa at home and then the kids and I went back to the Villa and had a quiet night. We had home-made pizza for dinner.

Yamaraashi-chan is deep into Twilight. At one point, I saw her bare arms and said to her, "You do not have hairy arms."

"I shaved them."

"You shaved your arms? When? Where did you get a razor?"

"At my Mom's house."

Sigh. She cannot outgrow that obsession fast enough.

This morning, tragedy struck. She had gotten her hair wet last night in the shower, and slept on a wet head. Her lovely haircut was a mess. Omaha, bless her heart, saved the day, getting her hair wet with a water spritzer and showing her how to brush it so it would curl under correctly.

"I saw her bare arms"

good for you for teaching her to exercise her constitutional rights at such a young age

Thought : if she's going to shave her arms, she really ought to wax them instead so they don't grow in looking even darker. Stubble is really hard to keep down if you're slavic like me.

Plus, of course, one iteration of that and she might 'forget' it before the next iteration. ;-)

I didn't learn about "sparkly vampires" until this last weekend.

I kind of wish I hadn't...

Arm hair is also something that gets singled out and mocked by peers, so don't expect her feelings on her arms to change anytime soon.

*remembering what it was like to be a pubescent tween with dark body hair and relatively fair skin*

Also arm stubble is *itchy*.

Yes, be sure to tell her that she's just shaved off the thinner, sun-bleached hair and it's going to come back thicker from the shaft, and more visible.

Waxing is the only way to go.

Oh, and tell her she'll have to moisturize as well since the hair previously helped distribute her natural oils to the skin.

Body maintenance is "fun".

Leg hair, too. It's just that it's more socially acceptable/expected to shave leg hair.

For what it's worth, I shave my forearms a couple of times a year for fun. I like the feeling of the process and the grow-out. I have medium brown hair over fair skin. The hair doesn't look any darker as it's growing, or once it's grown. The first couple of weeks of growth feels a little weird to other people touching my arm, and probably looks a little odd as well. But I don't find it at all itchy - especially with a little lotion. A scrubby poof/loofah helps keep ingrown hairs from being a problem the first week or so. The one thing that actually draws any real attention is that I can't stop petting the growth for a month or so after I've done it.
Just out of curiosity - was anyone planning to teach her how to shave her legs? (so she'd know how to do it safely and all, not that it *must* be done)
Mind you, I'm well aware I'm not a grade-schooler dealing with grade-school peers. But I am saying that shaving might not be as bad as all that. It also doesn't hurt *nearly* as bad as waxing.

I started bleaching the hair on my arms when I was about 14. Still do it. It's much better than shaving or waxing.

@Sign: Proving once again that *every* town in America, and probably the world, has a redneck car dealer that cannot spell.

@ Arm Hair Removal: No! Really just NO!

Kids will do what kids will do. Someone already commented, your focusing on it will just help her to focus on it more and as much as you want her to not worry about what everyone else thinks, she's going to.

I can't tell you how long I've tried to be ok with not shaving my legs, and I still don't usually succeed. I wear long pants and skirts most of the time, and usually give in to shaving on the occasions I am going to be seen in a swim suit (or naked) It's hard to go against what is considered beauty (or hygienic) by most of our society. Even harder is being a teenager and trying to be accepted by your peers.

Sure glad I am done with that!
