- Highlights of the debate:
- McCain sneered at the idea of "spreading the wealth." You non-wealthy people? Fuck you.
- McCain sneered at worrying about "the health of the mother." Young women facing pregnancy? Fuck you.
- McCain sneered at those who want nuclear plants to be safe. Those of you who'd rather not live next to another potential Chernobyl? Fuck you.
Now, I know perfectly well what McCain meant in the second and third points. Obama wants to run on the precautionary principle, the idea that we should never build a power plant until we have absolutely guaranteed that it can never present a threat to anyone. And "the health of the mother" is a code phrase used by the extremists in the abortion wars that has been pushed out of all proportion. But the audience didn't see that. The vast majority of people watching McCain put scare quotes around the phrase "health of the mother" are simply not political junkies and have never registered that phrase quite that way. That's why roomfuls of "undecideds" gave the debate to Obama.- Al Jazeera interviews Sarah Palin's fans!
- Al Jazeera interviewed people at a Palin rally, and the conversations are rather frightening:
- I'm afraid if he wins, the black will take over. He's not a Christian! This is a Christian nation! What is our country gonna end up like?
- When you got a Negro running for president, you need a first stringer. He's definitely a second stringer.
- He seems like a sheep - or a wolf in sheep's clothing to be honest with you. And I believe Palin - she's filled with the Holy Spirit, and I believe she's gonna bring honesty and integrity to the White House.
- Just the whole, Muslim thing, and everything, and everybody's still kinda - a lot of people have forgotten about 9/11, but... I dunno, it's just kinda... a little unnerving.
- I don't like the fact that he thinks us white people are trash... because we're not!
- Obama and his wife, I'm concerned that they could be anti-white. That he might hide that.
- Nouriel Roubini remains a ray of F#@?^@\&^ sunshine.
- He says, "We're going to be surprised by the severity of the recession and the severity of financial losses. The stock market is going to stop rallying soon enough when they see the economy is really tanking."
- Sarah Palin is completely divorced from reality
- After the Troopergate report came out, Sarah Palin wandered around the country this weekend telling her listeners she was very pleased that the report exonerated her of "any wrongdoing or ethical violations."
Line one of the report reads: "Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act."
Yesterday, Palin read from her teleprompter, "John has confronted the corrupt ways of Washington and the wasteful spending and the abuses of power. As president, he's gonna end those once and for all."
Starting with her, one assumes. - Putin's head rises over Alaska's airspace!
- So while Sarah Palin is claiming to know all about Russia and its dangers, most of the top executives of Russia's national oil development corporation, Gazprom, have landed in Alaska to offer construction and development experience to ConocoPhilips and Palin's Deputy Minister of Natural Resources.
Funny that. I think Putin's just messing with her head. - Waterboard Obama!
- This just has to be seen to be believed. This isn't some random forum, this is the official website of the Sacramento County Republican Party. The head of the party there said, "I cannot comment on how people interpret things."
Really? So you condone the use of your website to propagate suggestions of violence? (via Andrew Sullivan) - McCain hires a supporter of state-sponsored terrorism!
- Under McCain's own logic, his transition team is now in the hands of a man who, between the first and second Iraq wars, lobbied Congress to ease restrictions on Saddam's government and even claims to have been the first to suggest the (now known to be utterly corrupt) "oil for food" program.
If you don't believe that Bill Timmons supports terrorism, you have no basis to believe that Obama supports it either. - This game doesn't build character. It reveals it.
- Daniel Larison has a short blog entry that basically says that the "erratic" McCain we're seeing now is the McCain we've always known.
