First Impressions Matter

First impressions matter, and a really bad photograph can absolutely ruin that first impression. Take, for example, the photograph being used to tout a new television show, "Kath & Kim."

Look at that photograph. Look at those chins! Is it just me, or can I be forgiven for thinking that NBC was going to be airing a series about trannies?

The previews they've been showing has the mom at a bar with trannies. There is nothing appealing about this show for me.

I think there's something wrong with the lighting or the makeup, like it's a bad photoshop job or something. It looks like bad artifice. The summary from TV Guide (http://www.tv.com/show/75144/summary.html) has photos that show a much more natural looking pair of women, without the hollowed cheekbones and poorly lit eyes.

The makeup and hair is well done but poorly chosen and their poses are exaggerated glamor, both of which show up a fair amount in non-passing drag.

As an Australian, where the original show comes from, that photo makes Kath and Kim look far too upperclass to who the characters are. Scary.

However, if it made you think "another reality show about trailer trash", then the marketing department have got it right on the money. That's what it is about!

The 'first impression' that I got from this show were the ads telling us that the show is an adaptation from an Australian series. As if that should be taken as a positive attribute.

IMHO, with the exception of 'The Office' (which is popular, though I personally cannot stand it) the big networks previous attemps at Americanizing Brit/Aussie comedies like Coupling, and Red Dwarf have been unfunny, dismal failures. Though the female 'Cat' was HOT!

This is what Kath & Kim should look like, and if you read the article you may pick up why it was a hit over here. I expect, like almost every other TV show transplanted state-side, the US version will suck.
