This town is >< small.
Oct. 7th, 2008 11:28 amA friendly dose of surrealism for your day.
This morning, after a dental visit where I got the bad news ("You're gonna need a crown on 13, and probably 14 too"), I was walking toward the ${DAYJOB}. I stopped at a crosswalk to wait for the light, and next to me stood a man in his mid to late 20's carrying a hardcover copy of Artificial Intelligence for... and I couldn't see the rest.
"What are you reading there?"
He moved his arm and I could read, Artificial Intelligence for Video Game Programmers, a serious textbook, not one of those how-tos you get at Barnes & Noble. "Oh," I said. "Looks hardcore."
He said, "It is."
"Hey, do you know
shaterri?"
"Yeah, I know him," he said. "I'll probably see him sometime today."
"Can you give this to him? I've only been carrying it forever." I handed him a Yuletime card I picked up last Christmas season and bounced when I tried to mail it to Shaterri, twice, with "no such person at the address" marked.
"Yeah, that'll be a long trip, from my office to his."
"Thanks."

Date: 2008-10-07 06:59 pm (UTC)A few weeks ago, I was standing on my desk at work (something I never do) so I could talk to a couple of coworkers over the cubicle walls. I looked at my neighbor's monitor, and saw him peering at a photo of the Oakland skyline. It looked familiar. I looked more closely, and saw the distinctive markings-- police lights on the freeway, a photoshopped-in moon. It was a panoramic shot taken by my neighbor from the roof of my building, and there's a ten-foot print of it hanging in the 2nd floor lobby.
"Hey, why do you have Jim's photo?"
"We're thinking about using it for our CD liner, but we can't find the photographer to get permission."
"His email address is jim@..."

Date: 2008-10-08 01:32 am (UTC)There are handful of places in the world were geek supertravellers just kind of naturally end up, concentrating eddies in the flow of people, that sort people the way a swirling pan can sort flakes of gold.
It makes for serindipity on the edge of surrealism.
