This afternoon, I took the bus home early so Omaha could fulfill her responsibilities without haing to run around and deal with the children. I was on the bus at the same time that the local high school got out, and when it reached the transit center, two girls, probably both seniors, got on and set in the seat in front of mine. One was a girl with that lovely melange of European, Hispanic and African blood that results in broad hips, a lively face, and well-cared for long, dark springy curls with hints of gold in them. Her companion is one of those pale sylphs glamour photographers pant over waiting to turn 18, although she lacked a certain kind of verve. They both came across as typical seniors: a little tired, a little beat down by the world, trying to talk the talk and keep up appearances. I'm not sure how much of that may have been projection.

They were sitting at a slight angle to me. While I watched them, I saw the darker-skinned girl hand the other a sheet of folded up paper, torn fresh from a notebook. I couldn't make out much of what was written on it, but I could clearly make out the headline, written and re-written in big, bold pencil strokes (but still, in a girly, frilly way): "Good friends make the world go 'round, but friends with benefits make MY world!." The thin girl looked shocked, hit the other on the arm, then the two bumped their heads and giggled madly.

Neither one of them made my gaydar go off, but it may be defective or out of date these days. Unfortunately, it was my time to get off the bus right then, and I never learned more about them.

That's not necessarily a gay thing. Girls do silly stuff like that all the time. It may have been a super-sekrit message about a boy! OMgosh!

Well, that and I think there's a lot of experimentation that goes on amongst school (including college) age women... at least from my point of view there doesn't seem to be nearly the taboo on such things woman-to-woman that there does amongst straight males vs. gay males... women as a whole seem to be more flexible on such things, and this *is* something I've talked to a lady recently about.. you find bi and heteroflexible and even lesbian-but-with-exceptions women all over the place, but in my experience bi guys, or guys that are willing to bend their straightness (or straighten their bentness) are pretty darn rare.

Another observation is that our town *is* one where mixed couples of all sorts of mixing (race, religion, gender of all sorts) are accepted and even celebrated... and frankly, I'm pretty proud to be a part of that.

So who knows? I think, as long as they are happy and having fun, and they're of ages appropriate one to the other, and are safe and sane about it? Go for it. The more happy people we have in this world, the less screwed-up it will be.

(I'm totally missing the Inigo reference, though. I ought to get it, but I'm not.)

Sure, but Elf said they didn't ping his gaydar.

Inigo Montoya - The Princess Bride. A reference to the Hispanic-European blend?

Ohhhh, I get it, as in, boy do I have the babe for you...

OTOH, the kids were less than half his age... who knows? I know last I saw some little hottie walking by with pants so short her derrière was hanging out my reaction wasn't "oooh la la" but "woman, cover your backside!"...

But my point is, gay, straight, heteroflexible, or just *confused*, if they're having fun? let'em!

No, I was referring to "I do not think that phrase means what you think it means."

It's Inigo Montoya in the movie, but in the book it's Fezzick.
