I was talking to Yamaraashi-chan, and the subject came around to boys. She's in that stage where she and her friends are figuring out what the label "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" meant. I asked her why she thought having "a boyfriend" rather than "boys who are friends" was an important process. The conversation went back and forth for a while, and at one point I said, "Besides, boys are pretty dumb sometimes."

"Boys are not dumb!" she said.

I looked at her over the top of my bifocals and said, "Kid, I've been a boy. I've dated boys. Believe me. Boys can be dumb."

She was predictably unfazed. "Well, the ones I like aren't dumb."

She'll learn soon enough.

There's a difference between they "can be" dumb and they "are" dumb. I'm with her on this, the one's I like aren't dumb. But they can sure be doofuses sometimes. ;p

My little sister and I had a very similar discussion when she was about 13. About two weeks after she started 'dating' her first boyfriend, she came storming home with "WHY ARE ALL BOYS SO STUPID!!??!?"

My son just asked me that yesterday, what being someone's boyfriend meant when you're in elementary school. I told him that I thought it was mostly just talking about it, that you weren't expected to actually do anything. Gods, I hope I'm right about that one!
