- McCain: I don't believe Obama called Sarah Palin a pig.
- Man, the cynicism of the McCain campaign is through the floor now. It's just digging deeper.
- McCain: The fundamentals of our economy are workers and small business. Calling them 'unsound' is an insult!
- Apparently, economic flexibility, wage growth, the hours worked/buying power ratio, the value of the dollar, aren't part of the "fundamentals." As Benen says, it's straight out of the Rove playbook: calling for a withdrawl from Iraq is "hurting the troops." Questioning economic policy is an attempt to "insult the little guy."
- Brad DeLong documents the "distortions" in McCain's health care plan
- As DeLong points out, McCain's campaign rhetoric on health care reform is full of "I hope the insurance companies won't drop you" and "I hope your employer will continue to sponsor your insurance." That's not the kind of hope Obama's peddling.
- Friedman: McCain is making us stupid!

Imagine for a minute that attending the Republican convention in St. Paul, sitting in a skybox overlooking the convention floor, were observers from Russia, Iran and Venezuela. And imagine for a minute what these observers would have been doing when Rudy Giuliani led the delegates in a chant of "drill, baby, drill!"
I'll tell you what they would have been doing: the Russian, Iranian and Venezuelan observers would have been up out of their seats, exchanging high-fives and joining in the chant louder than anyone in the hall -"Yes! Yes! Drill, America, drill!" - because an America that is focused first and foremost on drilling for oil is an America more focused on feeding its oil habit than kicking it.
Why would Republicans, the party of business, want to focus our country on breathing life into a 19th-century technology - fossil fuels - rather than giving birth to a 21st-century technology - renewable energy? - Palin: I will not assist investigation
- At first, hewing to the "openness" and "honesty," our mavericky™ Republican VP candidate promised she would be open to any investigation. Apparently, not any longer.
The state Senate Judiciary Committee has annouced that they will not subpoena Palin, pointing to her earlier statement about how she would appear without one. If she doesn't appear, that would be contempt of Congress, no? The fun is just beginning. Get popcorn! - McCain: The Tina Fey skit was sexist.
- The McCain campaign whined that "just because Sarah Palin has different views than Hillary Clinton does not mean she lacks substance." But as the skit pointed out, just as everyone is pointing out, Palin does lack substantive opinions and even curiosity about the world around her. She's just like Bush: Charisma and ambition, but lacking the knowledge set and instincts necessary to do anything but charm her way to the top.
- Mitt Romney: John McCain is lying to you.
- I've seen this one in a lot of places. Mitt Romney talks to the press and in a brief clip tells people that McCain is dishonorable and lying and he's not sure how McCain would continue if he won the office.
- Push-polling nasty rumors about Barack Obama
- Push-polling is where a phone call from someone purporting to be a "pollster" pretends to ask you questions about your feelings of Barack Obama. But before he does so, he ladens the questions with a series of "facts" that purport to show that Obama is in bed with Hamas and wishes the destruction of Israel. The idea is to plant these ideas in your head; it's not a real poll, the information will never be used by anyone. But it's intent is to discourage you from going to the polls and voting for Obama.
- Serial liar Sarah Palin.
- Jimminy Cricket. The woman cannot help herself. This reminds me of the way Cindy McCain took a lovely story about adopting two Bangladeshi children and soured the story by lying about the circumstances; she claims now that Mother Theresa herself "convinced" Cindy to adopt the boys, but witnesses claim the two women never met, and Cindy has since retracted.
Now, Sarah Palin has apparently grown comfortable lying to all of America. She's now claiming that she's not using a teleprompter. Even the press don't believe her anymore. - Richard Cohen, one of McCain's favorite reporters, now calls McCain's campaign a tragedy and a farce.
-
His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.
- PASWO: Debbie Schlussel asks, 'Why don't we abuse Muslims the way the Chinese do?'
- Gods, every time I think the right wing can't get more revolting, I read someone like Schussel, who apparently disdains all brown people for their brownness.
She asks why we "coddle" Muslims, unlike the Chinese, and goes on to quote approvingly from an article that shows what the Chinese do to repress Muslims: deny them the right to belong to the government (Hey, Deb, Article IV, section 3, assuming you can read and don't use Naturally Speaking for your blog entries), may not wear veils, and even forcing Muslim restaurants to stay open during daylight hours during Ramadan.
There's another lovely entry in her blog where she takes an article about a soccer stadium riot after one side accused the other of using witchcraft, and Schussel adds "You just can't change certain, um, 'regional habits.'" Oh, come on, Debbie. You were so close. - Evangelical: Why I won't vote for McCain
The socialists, statists, humanists - the God-haters - have always hated God's order for family and spend their lives trying to destroy the Christian concept of family and to re-define "family" to what they think "family" should mean. The Suffrage movement was part of that process for them, and Sarah Palin running for vice-president is a continuation of that process. The leftists are just mad because they wanted "their girl" to be first. But most people on the right have become socialists themselves, hence the pom-pom waving for Sarah.
Sometimes, you don't point at something with outrage. Sometimes, you point at something to giggle.- Howard Freaking Kurtz: John McCain's lies and distortions!
- Holy shiznit. Howard Kurtz doesn't even try to evade the question. McCain is lying and cheating, and Kurtz is most interested in how liberal pundits who used to love McCain are "genuinely hurt" by McCain's abandonment of his own principles. A lovely hit piece, because it's a right-wing pundit shaking his head and sighing, "Whatever happened to the real John McCain?"
