Ah, in all of the angst, my Engine of Doom has posted another story to the website. Razing Castles goes back a long ways, back to near the end of the First Millenia, when I was mixing things up and starting to think about the long future of the Journal Entries. The last gasps of magic are still present in the Journal Entries universe (one of the things about the series I regard as a mistake, but oh well, it was a kitchen sink series when I started), and sometimes they show up with unintended consequences.

Edit:
[Gack... Apparently, I've already posted that one, and awhile ago. I'm not sure how it wound up back in my 'Pending' directory. I'll review the to-post list and, well, I'll think of something. Sorry about that.]

Actually, two versions are up.

Slightly different in that the second has a few formatting problems with underscores.

Gack! *Sigh*. Operator error. I'll fix it.

Using the link above gets a "500 Internal Server Error". Clicking from the episode list just sits there.

Actually I sort of liked the milder magical connotations in the Journal Entries odd as it sounds. Nothing too heavy (at least not outside of Backwater), but just a subtle something different. That goes for the vamp story too.

I agree. The magic was a human thing, it is something I understand more than the strange implications of full virtualization, among other things explored by the pendorverse. I know it sounds strange, since technology is a very human thing, but the implications lead to places that feel more and more alien.

I always wanted to know more about why the castle had to be moved. The 'early years' are my favorite :)

Another small point -
Psionics, telepathy, telekinetics and whatever other stuff might exist... What else are they but sci-fi's version of magic? I know there are studies about such things, but I'm sure at some stage people studied magic in the same way. Whether there is any type of telepathy in real life (I'm dubious but open to the basic premise so long as people don't get silly with it) the truth is it has all the appearance of "magic" without the stigma, at least the stigma for fictional purposes.

I suppose people want something more whether it be magic, psi/telepathy, omnipresent AIs or whatever else. Each have their own place in different settings in different ways, it is just unfortunate that science fiction had to introduce magic by the back door as much as the idea of psi appeals to me.
