Two months ago I went into the hospital for a minor procedure, and one of the things the doctor recommended was no heavy lifting for a week or two. That included skipping the gym. Well, that week turned into two, then four, and now eight, and today I finally went back to the gym.

The good news is that my arms are in great shape. Almost no loss of capacity in push-ups, pull-ups, or the like. I can still do 30 push-ups, and was able to do high reps with 25 pound weights in simple curls. Not too shabby.

The bad news is that my legs have gone to nothing. I could normally do 30 squat-thrusts; today I was able to do sixteen before my legs threatened to give. My knee gave me no unusual trouble, so that was reassuring, but it was still annoying that I burned out on the legs so quickly.

On the other hand, my leg stamina seems to be okay. I was able to do the running machine at my full speed for the full 20 minutes, so I guess it's not all bad.

waitaminit... The doc said to take it easy and you've been hauling dirt and more? Good grief.

The doc said for the first week or two, not the whole month. I've been fine since then. It was the laying off for two weeks that made "forgetting" to go to the gym easier. And then summer camp schedules, with all the insane running around, just made it even easier to lay off and not go.
