Another day, another Family Value Republican arrested for raping a teenager
State Representative Scott Muschany (R), was indicted yesterday for raping his mistress's 14-year-old daughter while the mother looked on. "Alcohol was a factor."

Mortality Salience Increases Your Willingess to Overspend
Two researchers at the Wharton Business school created an experiment to find out what thinking about your own death (not necessarily immanent, just that it will happen) will do to your buying habits-- it is a business school, after all.

The result ought to make you stop watching cop shows: people who had their own deaths uppermost in their thoughts were more likely to overspend, and even violate their own budgets. Shopping in the face of death, they concluded after their research, is not a survivalist reflex or a "die broke" jab, but merely an effective distraction mechanism, a form of escapism unbound by lesser threats like penury.

Hail to the Nag
So, the Weekly Standard has flip-flopped. First, Obama was ridiculous for suggesting that we check our tire pressure. Now, he's just a nag and a scold.

I'm really tired of the Republican "you can't sell personal responsibility to the American people" line of reasoning. Whatever happened to personal responisbility? (via Andrew Sullivan)

Intelligent Design: Michael Medved admits there's no there there
It's no surprise that Michael Medved has been hired on by the Discovery Institute to pimp Intelligent Design. The man believes in Bigfoot, too, so what's one more absurdity? But he should be careful with his words. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, he said:
The important thing about Intelligent Design is that it is not a theory - which is something I think they need to make more clear. Nor is Intelligent Design an explanation. Intelligent Design is a challenge. It's a challenge to evolution. It does not replace evolution with something else. Intelligent Design doesn't tell you what is true; it tells you what is not true. It tells you that it cannot be that this whole process was random.
Unfortunately, the Intelligent Design people have yet to actually find that magic flaw in thermodynamics or information theory that makes reality so "impossible." (via Ed Brayton)

White Supremacists Hope Backlash Against A President Obama Results In Race "Revolution."
David Duke sent out a letter to his followers saying,
[A Barack Obama presidency] will be a clear signal for millions of our people... Obama is a visual aid for White Americans who just don't get it yet that we have lost control of our country, and unless we get it back we are heading for complete annihilation as a people.
Because nothing says community, civility, and love of country like keeping the uppity black guy down, huh? There's more to love in that article. (via Stephanie Miller)

We're just waiting for Muschany to resign

He hasn't done so yet. I was not the least bit surprised to hear that he gave the typical excuse for not running this fall. Of course he needs to spend more time with his family. He's been off doing so much else!

He "represents" the district right next to mine, by the way. [livejournal.com profile] becky_zoole's terrific brother, Mark, is running against Muschany's hand-picked successor in November.

From a clinical standpoint, I cannot PROVE these two things are related.
