Wow, things you never want to see on your laptop. This was caused by Prey::
Aug 4 22:41:01 chi Critical temperature reached (100 C), shutting down.
Aug 4 22:41:01 chi acpid: received event "thermal_zone THM1 000000f0 00000001"
Aug 4 22:41:01 chi acpid: notifying client 5278[0:1000]
Aug 4 22:41:01 chi acpid: executing action "/etc/acpi/default.sh thermal_zone THM1 000000f0 00000001"
And then the computer just went.... off.

I enjoyed Prey, but I suspect it of being a substantial contributor to the recent death of my (four-year-old) graphics card. There's some serious number crunching for that game.

If I may, can I recommend Antec's laptop cooler? I use one with my Compaq laptop and have never had a problem with overheating. Quiet, too.

I may have to try that out. It doesn't happen often, but man it's scary that some heavy processing with both the CPU and the GPU can do that.

had that happen two weeks ago on a desktop unit; ironically, a CPU fan power wire had wandered into the CPU fan and was preventing it from spinning. The BIOS kept shutting off the computer after 2 minutes of heavy number crunching.

I was having that happen with my computer; after the most recent major update to City of Heroes, my system was running warm enough that, even with an 18" fan blowing air into the case, it would occasionally hit the 80°C thermal shutdown temperature. I finally got a ZeroTherm BTF92 CPU cooler, and it dropped the temperature of the CPU under maximum load by 10° and 20°C. It is unfortunate that with a laptop there really is little you can do to improve the CPU cooling other than increase airflow.
