I noticed something yesterday evening. I picked up a manga and tried to read it and, to my horror, realized that even the hirigana had turned to gibberish. I've let my Japanese skills rot so badly that I can't read it at all anymore.

Sigh.

Language skills require constant practice or they evaporate.

The extent of evaporation is astonishing, even in languages one spoke on a daily basis for years. The most amazing effect is observed in expats who *think* they can still speak their native language, but are not getting the nuances... ...practice really does bring it all back, better than before. But the practice doesn't stick any more permanently than, say, muscle structure sticks without exercise.
